How to induce black sapote flowering?
« on: January 14, 2026, 09:38:29 AM »
I got small grafted tree shipped from nursery with 3 fruit hanging already. That was 2 years ago. Last January only like 5 flowers, 2 fruits set. This January only 3 flowers despite tree being substancially bigger. Why so slow? Tree is like 10 bigger in overall mass compared to 2 years ago when had 3 fruits hanging already. We did have a lot of rain all year.

It could be your variety is just a shy bearer. I have a Fairchild cv that is about 30 years old that produces every year but never heavily. It grows extremely healthy here in sw fl tropical savanna climate with no irrigation or fertilizer.

According to a University of Florida publication, some varieties do better with a companion tree of a different variety.  There are some trees that produce many male flowers and few hermaphrodite flowers.  Hopefully, this is not your situation.

That is news to me but makes much sense. My tree flowers heavily every year but never fruits heavily. More than enough fot me and family. Good info GG.

While in Oaxaca near the capitol I asked somebody about a tree that was just covered with fruits.  It was a black sapote.  We are talking about arid and good altitude.  It’s such a different climate than where I am in lowland CR and you guys in FL.  We get a few large fruits but nothing like in Oaxaca.

I planted two varieties right on top of each other just in case. It's only been a few months but the trees did flower without any fruit set.
