Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best Mango seed germination technique
« on: July 10, 2024, 02:18:08 PM »
Hello all,
I am germinating some mango seeds in a glass bowl with water, (on top of the heat mat,) and directly in soil (kept in a sunny location). I have tried different ways of germination  includes Wet paper towel method ( both in a bowl / Ziplock,), in a bowl of water,  directly in soil etc..  Unfortunately never did a study with all different technique side-by-side.  Did anybody do a research on different techniques at the same time.  Thought it would be nice to record this.  Could you all please share your experience?

Hello All,
I am trying to root star gooseberry from cuttings.  Applied some rooting hormone (Aloe vera, Honey & cinnamon) & placed the cuttings in potting soil.  It’s almost 40 days now.  I don’t see any roots yet. I keep the pot in shade during daylight & bring it indoors & place it on a heat mat during night.  The cuttings are around the thickness of a pencil and around 8 - 12”  long.  I don’t see the cuttings drying out.  I see some small growth trying to shoot out from the stem (seeing this happening from the time i planted it.)  I also spray some water once a while.  Does anyone have any experience rooting these?  Please advise.  Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help identifying Mango
« on: June 25, 2024, 02:47:30 AM »
Hello All,
I got a 5G Mallika mango from Chpa Nursery El Monte in 2019.  It fruited that yr (just that one yr) & the fruit appeared different.  When I contacted Jimmy from Champa, the response i got from him was “ That fruit is deformed .  It is a mallika.  Just some of the fruit will be deformed especially with the young tree“.  I really don’t feel that that the tag got messed up.  Could someone find out what variety is this.  Thanks in Advance!

Hi all,
I’m planning to start a few mango seedlings as fun project to share with people and also for future grafting.  I also need one rootstock to add to my existing five year old Mallika mango tree (To double  the rootstock thanks to the suggestion from our fellow member @Nullzero).  I was planning to use Manila or Ataulfo as root stocks. After seeing an old post (pls check below) from MangoProfessor, I got confused. He suggests kent & few other as better options than Manila.

https://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=7089.0

Could someone pour your thoughts on which route stock I should choose ex. Mono or Poly.  Manila, Kent etc.  As we live in Torrance , CA - 90504( close to beach),  I prefer getting a suitable rootstock for our cooler weather even though I’m trying to give the tree a bit more heat by adding rocks at the bottom & supplemental heat from the landscape lighting after late evening.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks in Advance!

Hello all, we live in Torrance, CA close to beach.  I have a 4 ft Mallika mango tree that i got around 6 + yrs back.  It gave me 1 fruit the yr i got it (came with few baby fruits) & nothing after that. we have a wall behind the mango tree which is blocking part of the part of morning sunlight during winter.  Now the tree has grown up bit bigger,  I’m hoping it will get more sunlight. I’m also planning to add some rocks at the bottom to add more heat for the plant.  I need some suggestions on which one to choose?  Like, color, black versus brown,  1 - 2 inches vs bigger etc.  I would appreciate any input.  Also, should i just spread it over a feet or two around the tree or till the drip line?  Attaching few links from HD.  Planning to get some from Thompson building materials tomorrow.  Thank you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need input on jujube air layering
« on: June 19, 2024, 02:50:46 PM »
Hello experts,
I need some input on jujube air layering.  I recently started one (around 2+ weeks back) on my friend’s aged unknown Jujube tree.  Around 3/4 inch thick trunk & 3 - 4 feet long.  Just curious to know approximately how long will that take for the air layer to form roots?   We live in Torrance, CA (cooler climate, close to beach). If you have done one (especially Jujube) , pls share your experience.  I would really appreciate any inputs 😌🙏

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help with Jujube tree
« on: June 18, 2024, 03:09:11 PM »
Hi All,
This is my Li jujube that i got in 2019 & was not growing at all as the soil was not that great.  It’s around 6 ft tall.  I recently transplanted my Li jujubd to a different container with some new potting soil, fertilizer & manure.  When i tried to pull the tree off the container (soil was very dry & not looking fertile at all), i lost a lot of roots (50% or so). I believe those were mostly newer roots.  Ended up having a small root ball closer to the main trunk.  We did this around 25 days back.  After transplanting, left the tree in partial shade for few days & then moved closer to the original location.  It was sunny for a couple of days & then weather was partly cloudy & sun showed up lightly around late afternoon.  The tree appeared to be slightly wilted for few days & then started seeing mild yellowing.  Most of the flowers got aborted as well. Few days back , the leaves started falling off.  It’s getting slightly heated up here (60 - 75 degrees approximately).  I was on a travel for 2 days.  Watered this girl on Sat.  Returned back last night.  when I checked this morning, i see that most of the branches from the top are gone.  Few from the bottom are hanging around. I believe, the loss of roots & transplantation shock caused this. Hope this is not a permanent damage.

Will this tree send any more new growth at the location where we lost leaves.  Is there anything i could do to help the tree. Any help is appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help with mango grafting
« on: June 11, 2024, 01:56:58 PM »
Hello All, I need help from our grafting experts.  I have successfully grafted many other trees / plants.  But, having issues with this mango.  The varieties grafted around 3 weeks back all turned yellow or black.  I made wedge graft for a few & veneer graft (on the side of the trunk) as I don’t hv a lot of branches to cut (See little fruits on some of the branches) .  The cuttings were around 8” tall with 2 / 3 nodes.  As some of the branches were yellowing &  shriveling, i just removed the top 2” & grafted again.  I would really really appreciate any input pls.

My tree -  around 4’ tall

Graft 1

Graft 2

Graft 3 - removed top 2 inches of the yellowing cutting in an attempt to save a piece.

Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help with my Fig tree
« on: May 28, 2024, 07:07:02 PM »
Hi All, i need some help with my fig trees.  I got 3 different rooted fig cuttings in 2019  & planted them together.  As it was not receiving much sun, it was growing very slow & now reached a little over 5 ft.  I am planning to plant a Longan tree early next yr around march at the marked arrow close to the fig.  I am thinking to either:
1.  Move the figs very close to the papaya or,
2.  to the raised bed area (behind the wall) or,
3. into a 30 gal huge resin container (from Costco).

Pls see the marking in the below pic .  That where i want to plant the longan.

This is the spot ( 10 ft space) available in the raised area between santa rosa plum & White sapote.  This raised bed area is around 6 feet from the ground has around 6 ft. Length & runs around the width of the house(60 ft).

Costco plater - 23” diameter & 19” deep.

Also, i am planning to move it around late fall / winter so that the plant can cope up with the stress.  Pls let me know if i should do it now.
Could someone pls share your suggestions & help me to figure out with what to do.

I need some help with my Longan tree.  It doesn’t seem to be happy. It’s the same size since I got it in 5/2020 from Champa Nursery in El Monte.  This plant is in 5 g container & receives full sun during summer & around 4 hrs of sun during winter.  It  keeps sending some new growth & dries of later. I just have 2 tiny shoots now.  The plant is around 2 ft currently.  Also,  I just see some roots coming from the bottom of the container now.  So, planning to transplant.  I have few questions.  It would be great if experts can put in your thoughts.

1.  Should i plant it in to a 15 g black nursery pot or a 20 g Resin container from Costco (19” tall & 23” wide).  Picture attached.

2.  Should i put it by the year round full sun location / a hot wall.

3.  If I choose to plant it in the ground, how far this has to be planted away from the house / wall / other trees.

Thanks in advance,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need help with Loquat tree
« on: October 30, 2021, 07:43:25 PM »
Hi All,
I need some help here with my loquat tree.  I got this tree from my friend around three years back.  It was around 3 ft then.  My friend thinks it gave fruit before that.  But, all these years this tree keeps growing (around 8 ft now) & no fruit at all.  I am currently thinking about grafting this with scion of another tree from my neighbor.  I see lots of trunk from the bottom.  Should I keep them all, just remove half of each trunk & graft on that hard wood or just remove some of the top & graft (cleft, whip).  Also, should I remove some branches from the top (or from the base) as the tree looks so dense(around 5-6 ft wide).   I would appreciate any suggestions on this.  Thanks in Advance.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for Avocado Scions
« on: October 06, 2021, 06:59:04 PM »
Hi Friends,

I am looking for some avocado cuttings (from a fruiting tree) to graft on to my existing tree. I am looking for few different varieties with different ripening. If you have one or few varieties that you are willing to share, pls respond with the variety name. I’ll be happy to pay for the postage & also a decent price for the cuttings if interested. As my tree is young around 5 feet tall, I might need slightly thin branches. Btw, we live in soCal (Torrance CA). I am looking for suitable varieties pls.  Thanks in Advance.
