Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Lychee in Sarasota?
« on: June 13, 2024, 08:36:53 AM »
Emperor is your best bet for a compact tree with excellent fruit. It grows well in Osprey...i have several trees. And it seems to be more resistant to lychee mite than Sweetheart or Kaimana. Mauritius is a big tree.

Fruitscapes would be my first choice...i'd call and see if they're selling them first. Crowley's Nursery would be my second choice (call ahead and have them order it).

Where are you located Jake? Are you near Sarasota?

I thought Jackfruit tasted just OK until I tasted the "red" varieties. They've got orange flesh and have a sweeter and less juicy fruit flavor.

Excalibur (Lake Worth, FL) has the best premium varieties of Jackfruit.

I'm growing Red Morning, Excalibur Red, Dang Rasimi and TM Red.

Of the yellow varieties, the best I tasted was Bangkok Lemon.

Has anyone tried the Asunta 5 Paco?

Excalibur sells a variety called Cristela. The tree I bought had a slow growth habit.

Tommy,

Thanks.  Did you grow your palora from seed or cutting?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: A couple of questions about lychees

I have a sweetheart lychee tree in a 15 foot diameter space.  I can maintain that with yearly pruning, but would not want it to be in a smaller space. In fact, 20 foot diameter would be more appropriate.  I also noticed that you're in zone 11b/12a.  It might be difficult for you to have enough chill hours in your zone.  In Hawaii, one of the most popular varieties that fruits well with their low chill hours, is Kaimana.

Mine arrived today too.  Thanks!  They were large thick mature pads that filled the box.

LSU purple fig was bred for nematode resistance.  Mine does great in the ground here in Sarasota, FL.

Hi Aaron,

Do you have any of the white Champaca trees for sale?

That's good to hear!  What part of FL are you in?  Do you have any cuttings I could purchase?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Palora
« on: June 09, 2022, 03:09:40 PM »
Has anyone had luck growing the Palora variety in Florida?  I see a lot of ebay sellers from California selling Palora cuttings, and it makes me wonder if this variety is more challenging to grow in Florida.

I haven't noticed the flesh to be dry.  It is really delicious.  If you like jackfruit, I can't imagine you not enjoying Red Morning.

My mature lychee trees were treated for the lychee mite by the state of Florida last year.  Out of 7 trees, the 3 emperor lychees did just fine, the 2 sweethearts regrew 2/3 of their foliage, one Kaimana regrew only a few leaves and then died, and the other kaimana only has 1/3 of its foliage now.  The emperors were the only ones to bear fruit this year.  Every other previous year, I have had fruit set on all of those trees.

Nice healthy jackfruit tree Alan!  That's a nice amount of fruit for the tree to hold.  Glad to see you pulling that off up in Tampa!

Abiu seeds you sent have had a high germination rate: 24/27 germinated.  They also arrived fresh.

Thanks!

I use bird scare tape.

Scarecrow in past but it didn’t seem to help as much as the scare tape.

Glad to hear Brian!

All packages have been mailed and arrival dates look to be Monday

I will be making my first shipments tomorrow morning.  Half of the seeds are spoken for at this point.

I have replied to PMs from those who PM'd me.

Thanks,

Is this the seedless lychee that is available in China and Australia?  Or is this a variety that Quang discovered on his own through growing seeds?

I have had decent luck using bird scare (reflective) tape.

Hi Clint,

Hope you’re doing well.  Thanks for posting the video!  My 6 foot tree flowered this year but dropped all of the flowers.

I’m looking forward to the follow up video.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit Tree Spacing (Advice/Resources)
« on: June 01, 2021, 03:31:03 PM »
I spaced all of my trees in my yard at approximately 15 feet apart.  I have jackfruit, lychee, avocado, Longan, etc.

That was 8 years ago.

I wish I had spaced them 20 feet apart.
