Tropical Fruit Discussion / Zill 23-2 mango
« on: November 12, 2021, 11:55:33 AM »
Didn't find any info about Zill 23-2 aside from the web of Tropical Acres Farms but being a possible sibling of M4 and CC and a late season variety I'd like to know if there is more data already.

Anyone grows or has any experience about this cv regarding taste, season, etc?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Bacterial Black Spot in SoCal?
« on: February 25, 2021, 02:48:48 PM »
Hi everyone,

I've being reading for the last days all the posts I could find in the forum about MBBS and one thing got specially my attention: I didn't see any reference to cases in SoCal. Since every year  there is some trade of scions from Florida to SoCal, and the disease has been present already for quite a time there, I wonder why is that? Scions are less likely to transport the bacteria than fruit and leaves? Or did I miss the posts referring to recent cases in SoCal? Hope the answer is the first one but I'd like to hear your experience on this.

Cheers.

Hi,

I've seen a couple of times in this forum people commenting that Vietnamese White is a very good pollinator if not the best they know. I thought Sugar Dragon was the best one but know I have my doubts. Is it worth to get Vietnamese White as pollinator?

I  noticed that pollinating with some varieties give you bigger fruits than with other, for example my old H. undatus that give small, mild and white flesh fruits makes JC01 and AB get really big. The problem is that it not produce a lot of flowers and although I freeze polen, I think it wont be enough once all my varieties start producing.

Thanks

Hi guys,

I have all my scions of cherimoya pushing, they were grafted 16 days ago. I kept the plants indoors, no direct sun, in a steady range of temperature of 70-77ºF, watering carefully to avoid sap to push scion away from rootstock. At the same time I eliminated any new flush from rootstock following tips from Behl in an old post. So far so good, but last year I was in a similar situation and eventually lost many of them in the following weeks. So here some questions about what I must do now.

-Should I take the plants outdoors already and let them receive some direct sun at the last hours of the day? Or direct sun the whole day or keep them indoors for some weeks more? The forecasted range of min and max temperatures for the next 2 weeks in my location is 60-80ºF, sunny.

- Should I remove the flowers from the new flushes of the scions?

- When can I start to water in a normal rate?

Here some pics:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Salathiel, confirmation of the variety
« on: September 06, 2018, 03:05:18 PM »
Hi everyone,

I ask the experts in lychee to confirm if these pics match with what I should expect of a Salathiel lychee. I bought it in a pretty big nursery specialised in subtropicals and I don't have reasons to doubt of the variety other that the tree came without label. After a cold winter the tree, just planted in ground, produced a strong bloom, so I let it just 3 fruits to check out their characteristics. The tree bloomed after Kaimana and FZS and before Wae Chee. Its growing slowly. Fruit is delicious and of two fruits, both had chicken-tongue seed (the third is still ripening). The rest of its characteristics I think can be check in the pictures:

Hi,

I'm looking for seeds of Red Morning, Excalibur Red, Bangkok Lemon, Crunchy Lemon or Mai 3. Red Morning would be my preference after what I've read here, but any other would do as well.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mealybug on my avocado
« on: July 02, 2018, 01:21:44 PM »
Hi everyone.

I just discovered these tiny mealybugs in my avocado tree. They are really small (1 mm the biggest), set themselves along the midvein in the lower face of the leaf and ants seem to love them so much that after picking the leaf 10 minutes ago to make the pictures and while writing these lines, the seven ants that came with continues around them without caring about anything else.

Anyone knows the best treatment for these parasites?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best soil mix to germinate Garcinia spp.
« on: June 16, 2018, 08:18:58 AM »
I got several Garcinia this season (achachairu, mexicana, intermedia) and I planted them in a mix of peat (around 65%) and perlite (35%). I don't know if this is a good mix for Garcinia germination, so I'd like to know which one did you use successfully. Peat+perlite keeps humidity so well that I see some algae growing in the surface, so I'm worry I will waste my seeds using it because of fungi.

Thanks

Hi,

I've been told that most common variety here, Fino de Jete, shows some problems of incompatibility with other cvs. I can't tell much from my experience, aside from that Pierce seems to take better than El Bumpo on Fino de Jete, grafting same day and in the same way (whip and tongue). Have you observed same issues with this cv or others? Maybe Pierce or Cumbe or any other works better than Fino de Jete as interstock/rootstock in your experience.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Combining pitayas
« on: April 28, 2018, 06:40:27 AM »
I have some pitayas ready to plant in their definitive spot. Thing is I have 2 spots and 5 cv so I'd like to know how would you combine them in order to make easier hand pollination (2 in one spot, 3 in other one).

Varieties are:

American Beauty

Cosmic Charlie

Halley's Comet

S8 Sugar Dragon

Condor

Thank you in advance!  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Vacuum packaging to preserve scions
« on: March 14, 2018, 03:26:32 PM »
I got a doubt I'd like to share with you. I have a vacuum packaging machine at home since a couple of months ago and I'm using it to package scions of some fruit trees (persimmon, stone fruit, chestnut...). But somebody told me that vacuum packaging actually deshidrates scions. I don't understand how is that possible, but this guy has been grafting for years... So I'd appreciate the opinion of those that have tried this before. Any experiences?

Thank you

I'm going to set some new lines of drip irrigation for several recently planted trees that have or will have a good layer of mulch around. So my doubt is about how is better to set the tubes and emitters, over the mulch so water drops on its surface, under the mulch, so it drops directly on the floor or through the mulching material.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi,

I'm trying to find Copper(II) hydroxide here in Spain to make my own paint and is being way difficult. Shops don't sell less than 5 kilos for 45€ and you need a professional card of pesticide manipulator (which I don't have) to purchase it. There is any other copper fungicide easier to find that can be use as an alternative to Copper Hydroxide to prepare the paint?

Thanks for your help

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Multiroostock grafting into branches
« on: December 11, 2017, 01:17:19 PM »
I don't know if this grafting method have been already discussed in the forum, I couldn't find it. It's one of the weirdest ways to graft I've ever seen, instead of grafting cv into the rootstock, this method grafts several rootstocks into a cv branch, by using just their roots, like some kind of an air layering/grafting hybrid technique. By doing so, these guys get big plants with several main roots to feed the new tree.

Hi everyone,

I sown a few seeds of red jabo in September and finally two of them sprouted. Although didn't grow at all, they seemed OK until few days ago when I noticed that one had started to die back. Now the other one is dying back too. They are both still alive but it's plain that something is wrong in the conditions. They received some sun throw a window a few minutes per day (not anymore). Also I added by mistake water with some citric fertilise into the pot, in a normal dosis for mangoes. I wonder if any of these factors could explain this problem or could be something else. They are kept in a temperature of 64-74F. Any clue will be deeply appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grafting soursop Annona muricata
« on: November 18, 2017, 08:03:48 AM »
Hi everybody.

I got a couple of thin branches of a good quality soursop and I'd like to graft them into my 4 months old seedling.

This is the seedling:

And this is the material to graft:

Which grafting would you use for such a thin branches? I'd like to keep the original variety of the seedling since I want to know which kind of fruit will produce and to allow cross pollination between the 2 varieties.

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have two young rootstocks of D. virginiana and they are developing these black spots in their leaves. Seems a fungus to me. Anybody knows what could it be?

Thanks,

After reading lots of comments in the forum about growing lychees in pots and ground, I have a doubt about when to pass my two lychees remaining in pots into the ground. I already planted in June a Kaimana and a Wae Chee. They both suffered some burning/drying in the new flushes that they developed when were already in ground, due to too much sun and the stress from planting (they passed from a greenhouse to unfiltered sun at the same time). So I decided to keep my two other recent bought lychees (FZS and Salathiel) in their pots, placed in the north side of my garden, where they receive shadow until 5:30 PM and a shower from watering grass system every 48 hours. They are obviously happier there than the other two already in the ground in the western side, where is hotter and drier (anyway these two are dealing pretty well too, given that is their first summer into the ground, Kaimana, which enjoys wind and now also sun protection, finally developed big, green leaves with not burn tips).

So the question is that summer keeps going on, soon will come the fall, and I must take a decision regarding my two lychees in pots. Leaving them in the north side of the garden is not an option, wind, cold and total lack of direct sunlight during winter doesn't sound like the best setting for lychees. My doubt is if I should plant them now along with the other two lychees in the western side of the garden (they would have there shading meshes and shadow from trees, that will be remove as lychees grow) or would be better to keep them in pots and wait until next spring, having them indoors or in a south spot during winter.

These are the two trees (bought them in July, both developed new flushes almost intermediately after, and they are still growing/hardening these flushes):

Salathiel

Fay Zee Shiu

In the pictures it's impossible to see, but pots are typical tall pots for young trees, 14 inches tall and 6 inches wide (about 3 gallons).
