Your favourite fruits that grow in zone 7a
« on: March 15, 2025, 05:18:36 PM »
Hey everyone, I have given up on trying to grow all these kind of tropical and rare fruits. And now I'm looking for recommendations of fruits that can grow here!

Now I just want to enjoy what nature gives here, in zone 7a, without greenhouses. Please leave a comment down below with your favourite fruits that you have successfully grown in zone 7a, also include variety of you can!

Thanks to everyone that will reply!

I think you can grow jujube, they are ok even zone 5.
Apple, pear, cherry, are easy to grow in colder zone too.
In my area, I have to select low chill variety.

Jujube (Sugar Cane variety, Li is the basic classic but there are better varieties, best to get two),
you can do figs as well,
feijoa might survive especially with some protection on the really cold nights (Tanaka, Albert's varieties, Katieri are good, but sure which varieties have better cold tolerance).
Pawpaw is a definite yes, wild fruits are variable so maybe try some KSU varieties like Chappell (get two varieties),
medlars and hawthorns (medlar practically is a hawthorn),
maybe an Opuntia (cactus),
you can probably grow parfianka or wonderful pomegranates....
Cornelian cherry will happily grow there....
PROBABLY loquat...
Strawberry tree/madrone... Compacta is the easiest to get, but I think there are other varieties that taste better that you'd have to hunt around for...
Seaberries I've wanted to eventually grow myself, will definitely thrive there but you need a male,
and of course, PERSIMMONS.

I tried to make an exhaustive list but passiflora incarnata was a major oversight!!! Definitely grow this and put this as a higher priority,  they are very ornamental

IMO if you want just a few things to plant, the must haves:

feijoa, passiflora, pawpaw, and figs.  Then jujube and asian persimmon.

feijoa, if you can keep it alive (7a is cutting it very close, 7b is a safer spot) is probably the #1 plant you want to grow as it's relatively unknown, the fruit is great, the flowers are gorgeous, and even the petals taste good. I feel there's a lot of opportunity introducing feijoa to zone 7 and 8, more people would grow this fruit if they knew about it.

#2 would be pawpaw.  Might be a better choice than feijoa since it wouldn't ever require protection or intervention to keep it alive on extremely cold winters.  But pawpaw has some drawbacks, it's slow growing, deer make a beeline straight for the fruit, it doesn't keep long at all, and cooked or processed pawpaw tends to make people ill, you can make ice cream with it but don't think about drying it or cooking with it.

Pomegranate- the "Russian" varieties. I'm growing a few. So far the Afganski fruited and it's great. Won't be buying any underripe Wonderfuls from the grocery store ever again.
Persimmons- any really. Pest free.
Stone fruit- cherry, peach, plum, etc I like stone fruit but the pests make it a pain to grow, I don't wan't to spray pesticide so I bag the fruit. Kaolin clay has mixed results due to all the rain in the spring washing it off and giving the insects time to attack before the next spray.
The bush cherry varieties don't get bothered as much, fruit is sour but can be processed.

I recommend Parfianka pomegranate, soft seeds.

Will check that one out. I'm experimenting with soft seeded cold hardy ones already- Sirenevyi and a seedling of "Sweetheart" both survived 2f winter as tiny sticks!
