Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Sour Orange cold hardiness
« on: December 03, 2024, 04:56:19 PM »
It is difficult to give a specific degree of temperature, Sour Orange is not as cold tolerant a Trifoliate Orange, but is not all that far from it.

A pure albino (without any green at all)  will certainly die as soon ass the seed energy runs out.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Indoor Overwintering
« on: November 25, 2024, 06:04:28 PM »
Citrus trees can be placed in the dark over winter if the temperatures are kept low.  The kings of Europe often put their citrus trees in the basement for winter storage.  However, your trees will do better in a warm and good lighted location.

I don't know the exact recommended amounts for in soil applications.  However, I know that copper is required by citrus in low concentrations (5 to 16 ppm.).  When applied directly into container mediums it is becomes bond tightly in organic matter and can be deficient in highly organic soils.  It is not lost from soil, but it may be unavailable.  The better method would be by spray.

The seed will germinate either way.  If the seed coat is removed the seed will germinate faster.

I like New Zealand Lemonade best just before it becomes fully mature.  While the peel still has a little green to it.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Cut off sunburned trunk or let it grow?
« on: November 04, 2024, 06:58:56 PM »
I would also leave the trunk alone. Any decision can be rightly be made in the next several years.  Many trees with the same problem have grown into full developed trees.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Is this leaf miner?
« on: October 22, 2024, 11:47:50 AM »
I  agree with Galatians, that the problem is a nutrient deficiency.  The leaves look quite pale, maybe potassium and nitrogen. My bet the problem should correct itself with a good general fertilizing.

I have a 8 year old inground Dekopon tree grafted on C35 and it is only 6 feet tall.   C35  rootstock is a cross of Ruby orange X Webber Fawcett trifoliate orange.

There are some advantages obtained by utilizing various  rootstocks.  However, especially lemons on their own rootstock is absolutely fine.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Plant in ground now 8b?
« on: October 01, 2024, 05:03:32 PM »
The larger the tree the better it is able to protect it self. However, the smaller the tree the easier it is to give the tree protection against an unusual harsh cold spell.   If it was me I would give it a try.  However, have protection ready.  See if you can still find the larger old fashion Christmas lights.  They put out a lot of heat.  This planting would make a excellent long term educational topic for this forum, as you print your growing challenges and successes.  The best to you and your trees.

I wish you and your trees all the luck.  In zone 8b you have a good chance unless there is one of those terrible extra bad cold fronts

I bought it on line.  However, I'm sure there must be some dealer in Denver.

The trifoliate leaves & branches are from the rootstock.    However, you can cut out the trifoliate branches and retain the monfoliate branches from the original tree.  Then top work

Peep, if the soil is well draining then a large container should not be a problem with proper watering.

I used to have a Prague grafted on FD.   It was planted in the ground., I got it from Laszz   It fruited very well.  The only problem is that the fruit is terrible.  After  a couple years Ii finally removed the tree and planted a red grapefruit that I purchased from Hershell (Madison Nursery).
