Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Earliest ripening citrus

The warmer the area the tree is growing in the later the fruit will turn yellow color.  Many mandarin's and satsumas are actually mature before the fruit colors up.

I agree with vnomonee suggestion of Xie Shan.  Xie Shan is early maturing October.  Excellent tasting.  Was first place winner in the Southeastern citrus growers best tasting contest.

Boris, where do you get that Kumquats have problems when growing of their own roots?

5
Sorry HumongousChungus  I did not see that you  are located in Texas.

6
I use 25-5-15 by Jacks Professional Company.  This formula provides the 5-1-3 fertilizer required by citrus..

Absolutely the fruits of any citrus variety become better with the age of the tree. Each year the fruit will improve.  Generally a 5 year old tree produces high quality fruit.  I remember Dr. Malcolm Manners writing on the old forum, the very best fruit he ever ate was from a 25 year old grapefruit tree growing on the grounds of Florida Southern University.

In California, Macrophylla is used as a rootstock primarily only on lemons.   As you mentioned in your post, Macrophylla is quite susceptible to California Tristeza isolates.  Many times infected trees become stunted rather then quick decline.

Greg, it depends on the size/age of your trees.  When you water , water well  don't give the a sprinkle. For newly planted young tree I would water every 3 days until the root system develops.  One year old tree one time a week during thot summer months.

Long time professional graters successfully do micro grating.   However, this is no place for new grafters.  Wait until the item to be grafted is large enough to be handled easily.

Go to Madison Nursery web site.  Madison Nursery has a great selection and quality trees.  They can ship direct to you.

David I believe that it applies only to trees propagated in Florida.

t is a Manganese deficiency. A very common deficiency in citrus.  As Madison suggested, just fertilize the tree with a fertilizer that contains manganese and your tree should be fine

By USDA law every tree must be propagated and then remained until sold inside a USDA insect free approved screen house.  This screen house is inspected frequently. Therefor,  you can be assured that your tree did not get HLB while in Florida.

I use Ultra Pure horticultural oil.  It is the best of the many Horticultural Oils on the market. it comes in a 2.5 gallon container.. However there are many other  brands of HO on the market.

Highly improbable as you live in Canada.

I have never heard of the spray that you used.  For thrips I use Horticultural oil sprays.  Kills thrips, mealy bugs, aphids, scale, and , mites.

I have known Hershell for years.  Madison nursery is turning out to be a real asset for us hobby growers.

PYGEE, your US942 post is excellent, and surely helpful.  Thanks for such helpful information. What do you know about US942 acceptability to tristazia  virus.

I agree with JJRSS54 concerning the abilities of Sour Orang as a rootstock.  Sour Orange is well adapted to a broad range of soil types, including sand, sandy loam, loam, and clay soils. Good tolerance to salinity and to calcareous soils.

In the first two pictures the trees look quite health.  The third photo certainly looks like citrus canker.   You can easily  find a lot of information and pictures on the web.
