Does my citrus have greening/HLB
« on: August 24, 2023, 12:32:41 AM »
Hey!

I recently got a Valencia Orange tree (potted and labelled from Record Buck Farms - appears to be grafted) for free that has a lot of leaf damage and I was wondering if it's got HLB/greening. I've been trying to use images online to tell, and I think it's got the asymmetric blotching... But I'm not great at telling tbh.

I've got a very healthy Santa Teresa lemon and Navel Orange tree from Ontario and Quebec nurseries (>1 yr in my home) and a pretty 3 year old grapefruit from seed in a separate area that I'm hoping to keep that way. I was wondering what I should do with this tree if it is HLB (i.e. should I remove/discard it?). It's currently losing A LOT of leaves due to what I assume is the stress of the change in environment (expected this, and been through it before).

Anyway, just hoping for some advice and help in diagnosis! Thanks :)

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Highly improbable as you live in Canada.

Thanks for the response Millet!

My worry was that it got HLB in Florida at the nursery and then was shipped with it. But I'm guessing that they probably screen for it before sending plants out of state :)

Thanks again!

By USDA law every tree must be propagated and then remained until sold inside a USDA insect free approved screen house.  This screen house is inspected frequently. Therefor,  you can be assured that your tree did not get HLB while in Florida.

Millet, does that USDA law only apply to nurseries in the quarantined states?

David I believe that it applies only to trees propagated in Florida.

The tree does have some similar symptoms, but I would not panic at this point. Even if it does have HLB, it is going to be highly unlikely that it would spread to your other trees because you have no sap sucking insects (like psylids) inside your house. Just make sure to sterilize any pruning tools after working with the tree. There are some reports of people spreading the disease between trees with pruning or grafting tools.
