I root poncirus outside in the shade/ late dappled light. Coco-coir and in an upside down fish tank as the humidity dome. Very high success rate, I've done this in the summer though so heat might be a factor.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Meiwa dying back
« on: March 03, 2024, 10:52:49 PM »
My meiwa continues to decline. Now I realize this exact process happened to my nagami kumquat months ago. Except that the nagami was on own root and I chalked it up to root rot without really looking at it and tossed it.

There must be some sort of fungal or bacterial pathogen that only affects the grafted kumquat scion because the the rootstock (citrumelo) and interstock (poncirus) are unaffected.

I found this post on the Houzz forum which describes the same process. Hmmm

As a last resort, I put the meiwa in my greenhouse where it recieves full sun, day temps already get into the 90s.

Does anyone know how often I should water now that it's in the greenhouse? It's in 5-1-1. I will check it tomorrow for moisture, but since it has no leaves I don't want to drown the rootstock.

Amazing, definitely worth propagating

Yep that's the same article that convinced me to do the poncirus interstock on my meiwa that is on citrumelo since it mentions tree death after 5 years. Briteleaf emailed me about my first dead meiwa (the one with the brown line at the union) and offered to send one on X639 but I declined.

I appreciate the rootstock offer. The whole plant might die before I can even graft it. What does everyone think about using Thomasville as a rootstock?

@poncirusguy

I planted a bunch of seeds so if I lose this meiwa at least it won't take too long to get it flowering and fruiting again. Faster if I use a vigorous rootstock.

The first meiwa I owned came from Briteleaf that one died at the graft union... it was grafted to mandarin (SCS sun cha sha?) which I thought was a strange choice. There was a brown line at the union which looked fungal. Anyway I took budwood from that one which is the current meiwa that's dying again. So maybe there is some kind of pathogen? It grew for 2 seasons and had fruit without signs of anything though. I'll try spraying it with copper or agrifos if it continues declining.

Citrus General Discussion / Meiwa dying back

My meiwa is dying back with brown branches.
First it drops the leaves then the branches turn brown and die back. I checked the roots and there is no sign of rot. The leaves fall while completely green. I simply touch one and it drops.

I repotted the whole plant into fresh 5-1-1 from the old potting mix it was in to see if it would help. It's been a few days and still dropping leaves and branches are dying back.

The rootstock is citrumelo with poncirus as an interstock. Absolutely 0 rotten roots. The root system is the healthiest of all of my potted citrus that I've seen so far.

Any ideas?

Nothing has changed, I always water with diluted water soluable fertilizer. The new mix shouldn't have any buildup either.

Here's the original vine I've been posting about, took these today. This will be the 2nd winter it survives.
I painted the vine to minimize winter sun damage.

The other plant I didn't look at is probably fine as well, it's in a shaded spot behind a fence.

Healthy buds

Tiny bit of damage on the young tip

it know it doesnt help to say this now but you should consider grafting it. mine on sour orange is growing really well. it does not stop growing when its cooler like the previous years. no signs of rot

My second Turunji from Logie's just died. It, like the first one, was severely pot bound when I received it. Is there another vendor that sells them?

My 10 seeds came from Etsy. They were pretty dry but still had least 50% germinate. They take a while though. Lost 3 to a weed wacker despite clearly labeling and marking the plants.

I still have 2 vines planted outside that are alive after 2 winters (this will be the 2nd winter). So far no damage to stem coldest has been 15f.

Yes it's hard to authenticate what you are buying on eBay especially since lots of listing have stolen or stock pictures pulled off from the internet.

I've order makrut lime seeds from Sri Lanka, the seeds are legit but they are very dry (old). Some eventually sprouted but not many

Some annona seeds can still germinate 1-2 years later even if they are dry, so you might still get germination. Good idea to soak them before planting but like you said no way of knowing what you are getting until it germinates, and then have to wait for fruit to confirm

@nickc haha I get pawpaws that size with 1 or 2 seeds sometimes

@galatians thanks! i will graft it onto this tree since I dont have room for so many pots. i also planted seeds of a yellow skin sugar apple variety that I was told was imported from thailand that one will also go on this tree, the fruit was very sweet. seeds havent germinated yet unfortunately

@spaugh interesting will def try that

Thanks Nick. Yeah I'll do that then.

My theoretical fruit will probably finish inside my grow tent under LEDs, provided I don't get pests or mold issues on it due to the high humidity of the tent. But that is to be seen. I don't recall which forum member did this but he put his potted annona by a window indoors and it seemd to ripen the fruit so that is also an option

Thanks! Will do.

I wonder if putting the pot outside in late March would have the same effect as stripping leaves (low temps 30s-40s with possible freezing would cause defoliation?) Does cherimoya need chill hours? I did the same with potted feijoa in March and it was enough cold for blooms to form.

Also forgot to mention, there is a seedling sugar apple in the pot, when it gets a little bigger is it graft compatible on cherimoya?

It put out most of this growth while in the grow tent. I actually topped it at one point in order for it to branch out but it shot up a new shoot anyway.
You can tell this is indoor growth because the leaves are pretty big compared to the lower leaves when the plant was outside.

The new main stem where I topped it is still pretty green, not lignified wood. I don't want it to get taller so I just pinched growth at the top.

I am going to give it some 0-10-10 fertilzer, maybe it will put out some flowers in the spring or is that too soon?

This is my 2 year old seed grown cherimoya. I grew about 30 seedlings in a big pot, left the pot out in early spring which was hit with freezing temperatures many times.

I selected the most vigorous growing survivor with the least amount of damage.

It's almost 8ft tall (really like 6ft without the pot) after 2 years.

The annonacin also works as an insecticide, with effects to the nervous system. Probably why you felt nauseated

Looks awesome, just saw your post on FB. How long do they take to ripen up from the flower to yellow fruit stage?

47
The plant is otherwise healthy, or was. I had to cut it back when it didn't get watered when I was unvailable (that's after all of the fruit was harvested). But it's growing back now.

It gets full sun when outside. I will try fertizling with the reccomended once it gets back outside in the spring. Since I cut back now, I have 3 nice branches where I could potentially graft a different variety. If its too difficult to graft I might just get a pink guava the next time I see any for sale, or just give up and grow a big feijoa in its place since I definitely know the quality of the fruit.

Thank you for the ideas and tips!

48
Yes thats exactly how it came! So its probably a rooted cutting, I wonder if it's mislabled or if I'm doing something wrong growing wise. The fruit drop on their own and they are already soft. I've also tried picking them before they drop and they taste bitter at that point. They also never turn yellow, not even when they soften and have that gross flavor.

49
I did in fact get it at Home Depot. I don't remember it mentioning the nursery other than it was one of those "grow it on your porch" series of sub/tropical fruit plants that they sell once in a while here in north Jersey. It came in a colorful metal pot

50
Those look great Nick.

My supposed "Mexican guava" is putting out fruit that taste like rotten tomatoes. I'm not sure if when I bought the plant if it was grafted and the graft died and this is the rootstock fruit, but regardless the fruit is just disgusting.
