Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Nitrogen Fixers
« on: August 20, 2019, 11:15:16 PM »
Location: South Florida; Time: Summer; Soil: Sandy.

I planted a mix of seeds around a few mango trees a couple months ago as the rainy season was about to start. The mix was suppose to be the MILPA Garden Warm Season Mix from Green Cover Seed. The one I got had more variety and no corn seed? I added more red ripper cow peas to the mix. I did not check again until today. It looks like only two types of plants survived. A grass and the red ripper cow pea. Everything else died or was eaten.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Seed exchanging in geocaches
« on: August 20, 2019, 10:40:58 PM »
I have never geocached or exchanged seeds, but I wonder if they might benefit each other in combination? Some sites might work as seed exchanges. Some sites might work as plant a seed or seedling and lets see if it survives? Some sites night be small food forests and might get bigger and more nice using a geocache. I don't know? Just an idea I had a last week.

Survival of the fittest. Natural selection by landscaping preferences.

The only plants that will survive in the future are the one you choose to plant in your yard.

What are the top 10 best invasive species, in your opinion? Plants & animals?

If you plant trees around a desert is that considered invasive?

Now that we are in the middle of august posts are more important than ever. Who cares what is available in July?

I bought Red Ripper Cowpea as a nitrogen fixer, but the iguana eat them as fast as I can plant it. Now I buy raw peanuts as a ground cover / nitrogen fixer and use the red ripper cowpeas as bait for my traps.

By order of King Mango_Seed: All disposalable plastic products manufactured from this day forward must be either OD Green or Aquamarine.

10
Maybe aquamarine would be a better color so the styrofoam island offshore is also less of a eyesore?

11
Perhaps if Styrofoam was OD Green instead of white it would not blow around the neighborhood and be a eye sore but could be used like perlite in a soil mix? Patent Pending.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Moringa oleifera
« on: August 13, 2019, 10:22:24 AM »
Has anyone grown different varieties of moringa oleifera and compared them?  I saw a dwarf version at  https://www.rareseeds.com and several types at http://jatrophaworld.org/index.html
A seed exchange or source selling little packets of all the different varieties for a few dollars each would be helpful information. I hope the ones I bought are the really good heirloom type.

Looks like a tiki carver hit your tree and only finished the mouth. Like a graffiti artist they get spooked easily

When I kill a iguana I cut this tongue out and cook that up over a fire and just eat that. My wife thinks iguana are medicinal and she eats the rest.

Just kidding. Everything tastes like chicken. They don't call them tree chickens for nothing.

We don't fish for carp in America or mullet as far as I know. Aren't they vegans?

I was looking at a thorny bush to hack up and make a bonsai today and there were iguana inside playing around and mocking me.

Change is the only constant. Poor lychee tree. You should have a service or something.

Ordered some seeds of CARISSA CARANDAS and afterwards discovered it was used in the Great Hedge of India. Now I have the plant to build an impenetrable hedge around my garden.

I'm interested in tropical fruits & plants less likely to attract & be eaten by animals & people. Some plants may be less attractive if the have poisonous leaves for example like rhubarb. Some may have a strong smell like mint, rosemary or garlic. Some may be not grown commercially. Some might not ship well. Some might look strange. Some may be grown in a foreign land. Some may be hard to pick when properly ripe. Some may stay green and not be noticed. Some might be unfamiliar to the general public and wildlife.

I noticed the iguana near me do not eat my mango tree seedlings, everglade tomato, mustard greens, peanuts, acai palm tree seedling or Jamaican strawberry tree fruit.

I am mostly concerned about iguana, ducks, racoons, birds, and people, but here is a website on Deer Resistant Plants and Flowers to Grow in your Garden

http://www.thegardenhelper.com/deer.html

If you know of any other resistant edible plants I'd like to hear about it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Refractometer
« on: August 06, 2019, 07:26:39 PM »
I have never used a refractometer before and was wondering about them. I guess most people on this forum would check the sugar level of a fruit with one.

I have read some people smell mango seedlings before they decide whether to chop them down or not in their breeding program.

(1) Could a refractometer get a useful reading off a mango seedling leaf or sap from a stem?

(2) Can a refractometer be used to identify the clone of a polyembryonic seedling?

(3) What do you do you use a refractometer for?

(4) Why do I need one?

Can you predict if the offspring of two mangos will be monoembryonic or polyembryonic before crossing them?

20
There are several links to information on the internet about polyembryonic mangos in the "Seed Balls" section of this forum http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=31596.0

For example all the mangos in this rootstock list are poly except Glenn:

Poly article:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Iguana Wars
« on: August 06, 2019, 11:41:56 AM »
I watched a few more videos by iguana man on youtube yesterday and saw something to try to modify on my DIY iguana trap.

Also saw them catching bright green baby iguana at night when they were sleeping. They looked like they were easy to spot and catch with only a  flashlight.

'Plants Iguanas and Key Deer Ignore or Eat'

Looks like the Monroe County Extension website has updated their site and has eliminated this information, before I had a chance to read it.

« on: July 31, 2019, 03:11:03 AM »
I like grapefruit, oranges, blood oranges, cherries, peaches, mangos, melons, plums, grapes, ...

So far I planted mostly mango. And some mulberry, blackberry, jamaican strawberry tree, banana, black sapote, carambola, acai, moringa,& melons. The iguana ate the melons and about 100 different vegetable seedlings. They don't seem to like mustard greens, tomato or peanuts much?
