Eugenia flowers.
« on: February 01, 2016, 09:29:15 PM »
Back from a week off to find flowers on my pitangatuba and some small fruits on my candolleana. Pitangatuba I am pretty sure is just under two years old. 6 flowers in total and plant is about a foot tall.

Maybe I had the wrong idea, but that seems pretty precocious for pitangatuba. Congrats!

Yeah all the others are same size or larger but testing my theory of having them in water well pots all the others are just putting energy into growth but this one has flower buds where the others have shoots. I tried the same thing with Eugenia Florida and got 2 batches of flowers in under a year. Candolleana is about four years im guessing, it flowered last year but no fruit.

Sweet! Sounds like they might be in with a chance then. Looking forward to trying them, now I will have to pull a finger out and get a miracle fruit tree...

Hi Don

Congratulations, pintangatubas are very tasty, my trees are with lots of flowers too.
I eat fruits without using fruit miracle, my pitangatubas are not too acidic.
They just can not be stored long time because ferment easily, thus will need the miracle fruit because the taste is similar to vinegar.

A tip to collect the best fruit is to balance the tree, the fruit that falls will be in the ideal mature.

If you have a good crop, try a juice is very tasty.

Every pitangatuba I've had so far I've enjoyed without miracle fruit, but I tend to like sour fruits. Even if you're not a huge fan of sour, with a little sugar I bet they'd make a killer cocktail.

Just to clarify, the one flowering is in a water well pot and the others are in standard pots, or is it the other way around? Also, I'm assuming from the name that water well pots are similar to putting a pot in a tray of water. If I'm misunderstanding that please correct me. I'd love to get my pitangatuba fruiting sooner if possible.

Hi Alexandre, sounds like you are in for a nice crop too.
Dom, the one flowering is in a yates artesian self watering pot! They are a plastic pot with a built in reservoir that hold about 2-3litres of liquid in bottom and has strings in th bottom to wick the water up to the plant. All the rest are in same size pots, same mix but not 100%access to water. I will send a photo to you when I go out later if you want to post them up as I cant post photos as the phone wont allow me too. Can only email them. When I have a bunch of same seedlings i try and put one in as a test to see if constant access to water helps them any more. I will send photos of Eugenia Florida water well compared to pot, very amazing difference in size for trees just over a year old, year and a quarter.

Yes they certainly are in their own little paradise Dimples.

Pitangatuba, it seems that grows best when planted in situ.
This tree produces 200 fruits per year

Good deal. I think my pitangatuba just earned a spot in the kiddie pool next to my vexator.

Haha, I use a big cattle trough to sit some plants in but it also doubles up as the kids pool.
