Mango tree currently flowering at Fruit & Spice Park
« on: October 30, 2019, 01:37:46 PM »
I was down at Fruit and Spice park yesterday and checked for any flowering mango trees. Could only find one tree - Shew Ya Za Ma. Apparently only some branches had flowered. This variety is from Myanmar and tree had a spreading canopy. I have never tasted this variety and would like to know if anyone is growing it and know if its an early season variety like Rosigold.

We’re growing it. Fruited this year. Probably early to mid-season but it’s not a spring mango like Rosigold.

Thanks Alex. Hopefully will get to sample it next year.
Strange it was flowering now. I went to check what is fruiting now and found canistel, some unnamed Avocados, Barbados cherry and a fruit called Rukam that was pretty sweet reminiscent of a plum.

I was driving though Lehigh Acres today and saw a couple mango trees loaded with flowers.
These were big trees that didn't look like they get any attention. It's been very dry here since the
beginning of September. Also very warm this year. I have been watering my trees and they
keep flushing new growth. I wonder if I would have stopped watering if my trees would be
flowering as well? I do plan to stop the water starting November 1st.

I love that mango. I tasted it 2 years ago and the tree was loaded at the time. It's a delicious mango. Last year i don't remember tasting it ...don't think there was much on the tree or i came too late for any fruit?
Anyway , Alex is this an Indian mango or SE Asian any info on it? I remember you saying you got budwood from this tree and i hope you will have fruit next year.
Thanks for the pics and info.

Something Maurice Kong brought back from Myanmar i think. The first fruit was decent but not exceptional; however we could see the potential for better flavor as it’s not unusual for first year fruits to be below what they’re capable of becoming.
