Citrus General Discussion / best citrus for tropical climate
« on: March 20, 2017, 09:37:14 AM »
I'd like to add some more citrus to my garden. I currently have just ponderosa lemon, citrofortunella microcarpa and pomelo.
What other species are suitable for tropical climate and can fruit here?
I'm located at  10°N from the equator.
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please help me to ID this Passiflora
« on: December 01, 2016, 08:33:21 AM »
I harvested this "strange" passion fruit from my vines of the common edulis (red) and flavicarpa (yellow) types.
The fruit looked a little bit weird, oval shape with a hard "carton-like" skin whose colour is something between golden-yellow-lightbrown-pink
Thep pulp was of a yellow-orange colur definitely very sweet with a great flavour.
Unfortunatley I ate everything before deciding to take some pics and maybe save some seeds.
As I noticed wen i cut the fruit, the section shape of the rind was not round but hexagonal.
What variety could it be??

I'm seriously thinking to give it a try but i'm unsure if here, at 10°N from the equator, i've any possibility of success.
Anyone has experience of growing it in tropics?

Citrus General Discussion / Pomelo - citrus maxima strange leaves
« on: October 28, 2016, 08:01:39 AM »
My pomelo is about 1 year old and i transfered it in my garden a couple of months ago.
It's a grafted one, the  famous davao red sweet  on a wild pomelo rootstock.
When the small tree was in its pot, it  looked quite healthy and i had hard time to contain it's growth since it was pushing new leaves most of the time.
when i finally find a good place in my garden and i moved it to its final location i was expecting a vigorous growth but i was disappointed to notice that it never happened. only one bud but quite weak and not the usual deep brilliant green.
About one week ago i noticed some strange "mottling" of the leaves that exhibit some decolored spots both on upper and lower surface.
I examined both sides with a lens but i could'nt find any mites or scritters.
Any suggstions??
Thanks in advance!

« on: October 19, 2016, 08:48:11 AM »
Hello!
I've a good and productive annona squamosa tree and i'm thinking to propagate it by air layering (marcotting)
Has anybody any experience with it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Surprising sugarapple - Annona squamosa
« on: September 30, 2016, 09:44:20 AM »
My ATIS (this is local name for annona squamosa) is growing in my garden without any special attention.
This seedling is just 2 years and 5 months old and apparently doesn't look neither particularly healthy nor so green

But looking more carefully,  it's easy to notice  that the whole plant is surprisingly  loaded with tens of fruits that most of branches are leaning down for the burden

I think that after harvesting all the fruits i will prune it very short as i usually do with atis.

Some fruits are still small and dark green, some are ripening  looking more  "bumpy" with a pale green-yellow colour wth a hint of  pink

Size of the ripe fruits is remarkable with some reaching 250 grams ( more than 2 ounces or half pound)

The taste is excellent a bit more complex than a usual "plain" sugar-apple,  there is a pleasant flavour/aroma reminding me jasmine flower.
Flesh is thick and pulpy, seeds are really tiny compared to the usual local atis

Just wanted to share it, it's so great when a tree gives you plenty of fruits especially when it comes from a simple seed   :)

Citrus General Discussion / Have you ever seen anything similar?
« on: May 28, 2016, 09:20:30 AM »
my ponderosa lemons are 3 years old and look quite healthy in their pots.
They already started to bear fruits and this made me very happy  :)

During the last times more mature laves started to show a weird yellowing path

This really puzzled me since i've never seen such a kind of "inverted chlorosis"  :-\

Examining the lower side of the leaves with a magnifying lens i found nothing strange.
What could it be??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / what's happening to my mango tree?
« on: April 27, 2016, 09:37:48 AM »
My mango tree is tree years old and it looked quite healthy even though the canopy shape is a bit weird.
This picture was taken last february before the log period of drought we're experiencing here in the Philippines. The tree was pushing new leaves.

During the last month something changed and some leaves turned yellow and fell down.
The yellowing leaves are both new and old ones in an apparently random path.
This occurs in a "inverse-chlorosis-pattern" since it's first the leaf base near central vein to turn yellow  then gradually affecting the whole leaf that will eventually  fall.
I couldn't find any bug or small scritters under the laves and i water the three once a week since we never had rain for the last 60 days.

Any idea of what is the problem?
Thanks in advance!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My avocado first flowering
« on: March 04, 2016, 09:13:41 AM »
In february 2013 i planted an avocado seed in a pot and a couple of months later i transplanted the small seedling in my garden.
This is as it looked in may 2013

The area is rocky and has been levelled adding limestone as it's evedend in the picture. Before planting i dug a hole and i filled it with soil.
The tree managed to survive and grew well during the first year.
This is as it appeared some one year later

now the tree is 3 years old and much bigger (about  3.5 meters )  even if not so nicely shaped.
An unknown fungine infection defoliated it a couple of times and i had probably to prune it earlier.

Ths picture was taken a week ago

Today as i was watering i noticed something new among the new leaves flush: a couple of FLOWERS!  :)

I couldn't believe my eyes after just THREE years from planting.
I inspected carefully the tree but i found out these are the only flowers.

I know that avocado are quite "complicated" about pollination and since there are no other avocadoes blossoming at this time, do you think i still have a possibility to get even just one fruit?
Is there anything i could do to help the pollination process ?
Or maybe these are just "juvenile" flowers so they will just eventually fall down?
Any advice or suggestion is welcome thanks!

Hello evereybody!
I live on the island of Cebu - Philippines, just 10°N from the equator and I've several little fruit trees in my garden ( 1-3 years old).
I'm experiencing a terrible attack which is threatening practically all of them.
This year is really hard for plants here.
Because of El-Nino the climate is really crazy. January was raining all the time and since then, until now, we're experiencing several   months of strong drought with unnormally  hot temperatures and sometimes strong wind. Just the end of june and July have been quite normal.
The problem  started with sugarapples and the soursops whose leaves started to crumple and turn irregularly yellow showing dark brown "stains" in the lower side
.

Then same destiny for avocado
The upper side of the leaves shows irregular, asymmetric chlorotic areas with a blotchy mosaic appearance.
The lower side loooks "rusty" with tiny brown dots wich merge in bigger, dark brown areas.
The leaves become at first dull green, then bronze-green then yellowish, they look leathery, tend to curl and sometimes fall down.
Growth is stunted and there are no more fresh buds sprouting.

Same destiny for mango.

And finally lemon started to fall sick  :'(

I immediately suspected a mites attack (I know they thrive with hot dry weather) and I even sprayed the small trees with a special miticide but with no effect.
Actually I've never been able to see any of those small scritters examining several leaves with magnifying lens.
All the trees are planted in "holes" properly dug in the local limestone and filled with good soil.
I water them regularly, I remove all weeds which grow around and I fertilize once in a 3 months with a 12-12-12 NPK product and twice a year with a chelated microelement product.
I'm asking anybody who has any idea to help me please for  identifying and fixing my problem.
I thank you very much in advance for any advice or suggestion!
