« on: August 18, 2021, 09:33:46 PM »
Wow guys here is the story that happened to me just yesterday.

So i was here in dominican republic at my family's house and there i was eating lunch a bit late then i was like hmm my mom must be on a diet there's that papaya i have seen it there for almost a week. hmmm what is this mango smell...i get closer no...no way can't be. what it's a mango!

then i grab this mango and start asking the maid where this came from. doesn't know. then i ask my mom but surprise one of my brother is visiting. hey guys what is this i said  :o??
is it cabeza? the legend of cabeza de hombre? yes my mom said.
turns out my brother got it from his girlfriends house. but wait i thought this was only a legend?
no the dad of my brother's gf is a very old man. so that explains why he has this in his house. what?? i need one of these trees...i suck at grafting must learn xD

so that's the mango a i took a pic of it and compared it to other mangos eaten here. from left to right
cabeza,keitt,organico,grano de oro,mingolo banilejo

tell me what u think guys, i will try to reproduce this tree  ;D

the mango has not been cut yet. it's still there in the kitchen  ;D
unfortunately the mango is not mine  :'( it's my mom's and no one can dare to take a mango (or a cake) from her. she's obsessed with them. but the good news i will inherit the seed she told me  ;D
my brother is supposed to bring me some more of these tho  :)

Is this the same as Cabessa mango?  That's also an gigantic fruit.  If it is, it's already available as a grafted tree in Florida.

now it was planted and lets see what happens.

The seed reminds me of Keitt, so I'm guessing Mulgoba is in its DNA. That rightmost mango is Delicious! I'm not Dominican but I'm addicted to Banilejo :)

I don't think the seed needs to be dried, which does more harm than good. Just clean it (so less bugs attacking) and place it on the top of the soil, then cover the seed with green leaves to hold moisture and protect from hot sun. Water to keep the pile moist and it will germinate.

for the first dude cool, i don't really like banilejo tho..very small, not my type of flavor and then it leaves hairs between my teeth.

yeah you are right tho i was only trying to dry the seed enough so i could take the inner part out. see it's VERY humid here so it was raining and instead of getting dry it had like bugs and flies around it xD
but then i can take mango seeds out and germinate them in pure sand. because it's gonna stay kinda wet or humid anyways(during summer)

10 years ago when I was a newbie in this game, I followed people advice of removing the seed from the hush, but now I think it's best just leave the seed in the hush and it will do just fine while the hush protect the meaty seed from eating by bugs. I just place it on soil where I want to have a tree, then cover it with green leaves, and water the pile when needed.

Julian Lara has a variety named Cabeza by his Father. Story is a customer had it growing in his yard in Kendall back in the 70's. It was so huge, he said it was a head. He was given budwood, it's been at Lara Farms ever since.

In PR we have a big one named mango piña. I see it in Rincón near the Beach.

I was fortunate to try this variety from a collector.
Tastes just like Kent and even looks like it, but way bigger.
I have some pictures I'll have to go back and find them.

Yes the taste was really good...

After speaking with a mango grower and i told him the story but he told me hey they are probably overgrown kent or keitts because the tree is so old that it only had a few fruits so all the energy went to those. next batch after a few months(not sure if it was same tree) but the fruits my brother brought home were just average/large. the seed never made it either so that was an uninspiring end to the story.

It could be,
I'd need to ask the collector, but my best guess is maybe an improved selection of kent as his tree made large fruits.
Or could also just be less fruits on a regular kent. Either way those mangos were gigantic.

Had a Cabeza from Julian Lara this year and it was excellent fiberless classic flavor with a tanginess like the drink tang. I didnt think to weigh it but had to be around 3 lbs. One of.the.best of last season for me.

Truly Tropical did YouTube video interviewing Julian Lara about his Cabeza variety. I was wrong , his father collected the bud wood in the 90's not 70's. He may have mentioned that the customer planted a Keitt seed that begat Cabeza.
