Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lujan Jaboticaba - 7b in Ground Test

Lujan and Campo Ramon looked the best out of my Plinias during winter.  Barely even dropped a couple leaves at most.

Pull any weeds/brush you have nearby your plants, they like to hide.  I have my plants on plastic sheet but some slugs will still get on it.  I find dropping salt around the area every once in a while deters them.  I tried using copper tape around the actual pots as well but did not find it too effective.  I haven't seen hardly any this year compared to last year.

Neat thread.  I am growing out a handful of Pouteria myself.

Pouteria/Planchanella Australis is a very easy to grow tree here and grows quite rapidly.  The pic below is from over 6 months ago and it is in a bigger pot now but could use a even bigger pot or go into the ground very soon.  Did not even wince during winter and can handle up to mid 90s on the hottest part of summer in direct sun with no issue.

Pouteria Hypoglauca seems to be fine though that is recent addition to my collection.  There is a fellow in my neck of the woods that got that one to fruit here so should be okay.

Pradosia Lactescens cv. Gigante.  Think I had this one since December.  Zero issues with the cold, no bad looking leaves or anything.  Will see how it does when summer sun turns up the heat.

The only Pouteria that is not looking best is Green Sapote, it is kind of raggedy looking after winter and is just starting to bounce back.  I have a small Mamey seedling that I left outside unprotected like a month ago and has some small discolored blotches on leaves I believe from chilly weather.

Maybe really young sprouts should avoid full sun but I blast mine and they love it.  This is a full sun plant and will shed leaves around this time and start pushing new growth

How long did it take to flower from seed?

This time next year I could be in for some scions.  My goal is to graft onto Myrcianthes Halli, not sure if anyone has tried that yet.

7
I can vouch for Adam's grafted Lucs.  Only had for a couple months so far and took our winter just fine.  It is just starting to push now that weather is warming up again.

Bummer...RIP to the fallen seedlings.  Maybe they are a bit like Campomanesia and inexplicably die once sprouting.  The Guianensis I have outside is doing fine but not really doing much.  Cearensis sprouts are both doing good and have 1 set of leaves now:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yangmei (Morella/Myrica rubra) thread
« on: March 19, 2024, 04:18:46 PM »
Just noticed that my Yangmei seedlings are popping their heads out of the dirt after a long winters nap. These were the seeds planted from the Weee! local order last July. I just buried them in a bunch of small pots, left them outside, and forgot about them.

Which varieties are those? I only got the Purple Pearl in July and mine have been sprouted of the soil for probably over a month now.  I thought the cold stratification would trigger them faster to pop up where you're at since marginally colder.  I did basically same thing and paid no attention to mine.  Here is mine from today:

Hey I get it the prices are high, I would pay less if I could find a cheaper source but I don't think you would be able to find just about any of these in markets around here except for cherimoya.  We are not as blessed with tropical fruit like Hawaii or southern Florida.

I did try the maprang.  The fruit is small, the seed inside is like a mini mango seed.  The texture is different than mango, definitely a lot like plum.  The taste is good but nothing crazy.  I personally prefer a good mango but would take the maprang over some of the more bland mangos I have had.

Yes prices are steep for sure, but a lot of these are imported and would never grow here outdoors like Sugar Apple or Abiu.

Hi all,

Just stopped by at Specialty Produce.  It's nice to try a bunch of different rare fruit before committing to growing out.  Just thought I would share some pictures.

I took the last abiu that was available so sorry if someone is looking for it.  Have a great weekend everybody.

Pm sent.

Looking good, glad it made it.  Mine is beat up a bit too but I pushed it back into the sun a couple months ago and it seems fine for now.  Funnily enough, the mamey growing right next to it looks fantastic (I thought green sapote was more hardy?), but it is also about a foot taller.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Star apple varieties?
« on: March 01, 2024, 07:34:29 PM »
I have only ever tried the Bo Hong star apple from Frankies, it was a good fruit but I don't have anything to compare it to.  I believe a couple sellers were on here a year or so go selling the seeds, supposed to be a selected cultivar from Vietnam.

Thanks for the cinnamon apple and araza seedling.  They arrived today and looked great.  Packed really nice and quick shipping.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is wrong with my Red Jaboticaba?
« on: February 26, 2024, 08:05:25 PM »
It has been a cool but very wet winter.  Most of my jabos look fine, I don't use saucers in the winter time.  Defoliation and ugly looking leaves to some degree is normal depending on the variety, while others may not be affected hardly.  We are already past the coldest part of winter and most of where my leaves have dropped already have new growth appearing to gear up for spring. Good luck with your plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are black and white sapote worth it
« on: February 19, 2024, 01:27:41 AM »
I can't comment on black sapote but white sapote is good.  The ones I had flavor a bit like pear with some mild tropical notes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: is there a good general tropical soil mix
« on: February 19, 2024, 01:20:29 AM »
Ocean Forest has been fantastic for me.  I also use or combine with Sunshine Mix #4.  And sphagnum peat moss with perlite and a bit of earthworm castings,/sand is good stuff too.

You could try Manila mango, I hear it is a little bit more hardy.  Winter with 28F probably would be risky though especially frequent nights in that range.  It would be better off if you could protect it during those nights.

Seems at least cold tolerant as Psidiums. I have the small seedling in my unheated greenhouse and it probably took a low of somewhere around 40 with no issue at all, but it also has not really grown at all and that could be because we are still in winter or that it is in shady part of the greenhouse.  I am hoping that it at least handles sun like psidiums and take ours full blast.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone growing out Mouriri?
« on: February 16, 2024, 02:38:26 PM »
Wondering if anyone else is growing out species from this genus.  Appears to be from Myrtales order so somewhat related to psidiums, eugenia etc.  There is little info out there and I want to give them the best growing conditions that I can.  I have like a 3 inch tall M. Guianensis and seedlings are sprouting now for M. Cearensis.

24
I have picked up some free pots from HD before but they are not big as 7g, probably the biggest I saw was maybe a 2 or 3g.  You may want to check out local nurseries or bigger chain ones, a lot of them buy a lot in bulk.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Got to try a Golden Soursop!
« on: February 09, 2024, 06:08:52 PM »
I think they are mostly true to seed (at least I hope).  Did the golden soursop cost an arm and a leg?  There is a guy around here selling them for $100 a pop and I am tempted.
