Citrus General Discussion / Re: Poorly pruned citrus
« on: January 17, 2025, 06:15:24 PM »
To encourage new branches to grow on a citrus tree after pruning, focus on cutting just above a healthy bud on the branch, which will naturally stimulate new growth from that bud; additionally, you can use a technique called "notching" where you make a small cut in the bark just above the bud to further promote branching; ensure you prune at the right time of year, typically during the dormant season, and provide proper care like adequate sunlight and fertilization to support new growth.

Amazing amount of seeds. That would be a killer for me.

I m growing a white Marsh grapefruit, and also a red grapefruit in zone 5 Colorado inside a greenhouse.   Both do well, however the red fruited grapefruit never turns red. This is due not enough heat.   I  could turn up the greenhouse heat greenhouse but cost would greatly go up.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Alico Citrus in FLA
« on: January 09, 2025, 06:53:43 PM »
Alico, has been a large (VERY LARGE) citrus grower, for a long time.  They have for the last 7 or 8 years spent a lot of money, time and talent trying every angle possible to grow their tree in the face of HLB.  They were, and are a courageous company.  This is a great tragedy to the citrus heritage to the Sunshine state. I  certainly wish them every success in the future.

I agree with jbirdfunk concerning C-35.   Sour Orange would also be a good root stock for your soil type.

8
Depends of the type of soil the tree will be planted in. Is your soil clay, loam, sandy loam or sandy soil?

y Dekopon tree is presently turning yellow.

I just quote what the University of California Riverside recommends for a better bloom.  As happens in life there frequently is more than one way to accoumplish a goal.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Where to buy citrus online (USA)

Shipping any variety of citrus into California is against California law.

mazing how dense the tree's foliage is.   Great crop of fruit.

13
Seanny, your in California, and the the above recommendation from UCR would directly apply to you.

I have used low biuret urea to greatly increase spring flowering, it works great.  According to the Citrus Production Manual, published by the University of California either Low Biuret Urea (46-0-0) or Potassium Phosphite (0-28-26) can be used.  The spray to increase bloom should be sprayed between December 15 and to February 15.   For warm greenhouse production the earlier spray of December 15 provides a much better bloom.   I  can find no where in the University's production manual that it states  that nitrogen inhibits flowering.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Sour Orange cold hardiness
« on: December 11, 2024, 04:40:20 PM »
Sour oranges are heavily used in marmalade manufacturing, perfumes, flavoring, and in Earl Gray tea.

16
It depends on the age of the tree, and how long the fruit is left hanging on the tree.

It is difficult to give a specific degree of temperature, Sour Orange is not as cold tolerant a Trifoliate Orange, but is not all that far from it.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Indoor Overwintering
« on: November 25, 2024, 06:04:28 PM »
Citrus trees can be placed in the dark over winter if the temperatures are kept low.  The kings of Europe often put their citrus trees in the basement for winter storage.  However, your trees will do better in a warm and good lighted location.

I don't know the exact recommended amounts for in soil applications.  However, I know that copper is required by citrus in low concentrations (5 to 16 ppm.).  When applied directly into container mediums it is becomes bond tightly in organic matter and can be deficient in highly organic soils.  It is not lost from soil, but it may be unavailable.  The better method would be by spray.

The seed will germinate either way.  If the seed coat is removed the seed will germinate faster.
