Wanted: Pickering mango seeds
« on: May 06, 2014, 10:03:19 AM »
Hi, I know it is still early in the season, but I am looking for seeds for a Pickering Mango. Also does anyone know of any new , (condo mangoes) coming out?
Thanks

Why Pickering seeds?  If you are looking to grow one, you should definitely just invest in a grafted plant.

No, no new condo mango varieties on the horizon.

I could sell them to you but you should be aware that Pickering does not come true from seed.

Although I could order one grafted on-line, the heat is already starting here and I'm afraid the grafted plant wouldn't survive the trip. I've lost several fruit trees that way. I thought mangoes came true from seed? I think I read that in this forum but I've never grown one before. The types they have locally are larger varieties and I want the Pickering because of size. It should be easy for me to keep it in a pot and bring it inside during the cold weather.

I thought mangoes came true from seed?

Polyembryonic types generally will but monoembryonic cultivars like Pickering will not. If you plant a Pickering seed you will not get a Pickering tree.
