Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air Layer Lychee Questions after Potting...
« on: August 10, 2025, 03:21:12 PM »

So its been 11 weeks since I did my second try (first one didn't have any roots at all) on Air layering a lychee branch. This one didn't have a lot of roots but it did have some so I potted it up and watered it well. I have a before and after photos of it before I pugged it. Most of everything I read said to remove a lot of the leaves to put all its energy to the roots...my question is did I remove enough? Should I remove more?? I'm planning on putting this in the shade for probably several weeks. If anyone else has any other suggestions or tips please let me know.

Thanks!

Saw this mango tree when walking near my neigborhood, the house seems vacant now so no one to ask. The tree appears to be some type of Dwarf the trunk is quite short.

Took 2 photos...I can take another in a few weeks when the mangoes are larger if that helps.

I was given this today and she was told it might be paw paw but none of the pictures on google match this. Is it even an edible fruit…It’s very hard so I assume it isn’t ripe?

 Thanks for your help

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Air Layering Questions...
« on: March 02, 2025, 12:10:36 PM »

Hi I have a large Mauritius Lychee tree that I want to try and air layer a branch to see if I can do it  ;)...a few questions for you guys that have had success in doing it.

When is the best time to do it, mine is in FULL bloom right now with thousands of Bees that are buzzing all over...or should I wait till after harvest end of May or early June is usually when they are done for the season.

What size branch should I be using...I want to pick the biggest one I can use of course but want it to be succesful so I don't want to use one that is too big of a branch.

I plan on using the Burpee super growing pellets that you soak in water (it says its made from natural coconut fibers)... add that to a plastic bag, make a slit in the bad and wrap the whole thing around the cambium and tie it up with cable ties.

How many weeks do you think it will be before there are enough roots to remove the branch from the tree?

If there are Any other advise of what and what not to do is very appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Here's the tree I took pics today...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are these Guavas or non edible fruits??
« on: July 27, 2024, 12:10:48 PM »
This tree belongs to my neighbor and she has no idea what it is...she bought the house with the tree already there. The fruits resemble guavas but they are very small...sizes vary from a large "pea" to a large grape...they  turn red when they are mature or ripe...any idea? The leaves also doesn't look like a guava tree... Maybe its not a Guava at all Lol...

Thanks in advance for any help on the ID

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Please help with Mango ID...
« on: July 12, 2024, 08:35:35 AM »

A neighbor wanted to know if I can help ID her mango tree...she bought it 3 or 4 years ago and was told it was a Valencia Pride (not tag)...clearly it is NOT! The fruits taste very good and no fiber but was wondering if someone might have a clue what it might be...the tree is grafted so its not a seedling.

The fruits are appx 3.5"- 4" long...not very big...Thanks for any help...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee...Mauritius
« on: May 24, 2024, 03:36:16 PM »
My Mauritiuis is fruiting this year, last 2 years it bloomed but the first year late frost nipped it and last year I had blooms but the tiny little fruitlets all dropped. I found out it was due to drought I had NO idea I had to water mature/established Lychee trees, I thought they were like my Mango trees, I do not give them any supplemental water except what my sprinklers and Mother nature provides  :)...this year I decided to water my Mauritius  once or twice a week once it started to bloom...

Not quite ripe yet, but I'm afraid the Squirrels and Birds will beat me to it before they are ripe...they don't seem to care whether they're ripe or not  >:(

Pau, I would ask the some of the members here that grow them in California, all I know about my Lychee tree is it loves water...when it was young and not fruiting yet...I would fertilize mine monthly with a "light" fertilizer from March till Oct since is when mine are actively growing. Best of luck I think you should give it another try.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizing Young Persimmon Trees...
« on: February 12, 2024, 10:52:24 AM »

Hi all, I have 2 Persimmon trees planted 2 years ago in April/May and I was wondering if now is a good time to fertilize it lightly before it starts to break out of dormancy in a few weeks...or should I wait till I actually see some swelling on the young trees? Also what brand of fertilizers are you guys using. I have Dr Earth Fruit tree organic that I'm going to use.

Thanks for any help and advise  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cogshall...is it ready to pick??
« on: May 18, 2023, 03:39:23 PM »

I have a few of these Cogshall mangos that is starting to blush, they are getting a lot of direct sun so I know that's part of the reason for the color blushing but was wondering if they are mature enough to pick and let ripen on the counter? Trying to beat the squirrels but don't want to pick too soon only to let it rot  :(

Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance   :)

We're VERY windy today...30 plus mph! While taking pictures of my Maha, 3 small Mahas fell to the ground one by one due to the branches hitting each other. I had to come inside I am afraid to look tonight to see how many mangoes are going to be on the ground  :'( :'( >:( >:(

Couldn't bare to throw them away, I might make green mango salad

12

I have 10 year old Lychee that had a decent amount of baby fruits this year, last year the freeze damaged all the blooms... but apparently due to the very, very dry and super windy days we have been having lately caused all my baby fruits to fall and now a ton of leaves are shedding also. I didn't give it any supplemental water because I thought since it was an established tree it didn't need it but obviously I am wrong! Even though the birds and the squirrels eat 90% of them and they eat them before they are ripe so basically they don't leave me any anyways, it  is still sad to see them all fall off  :'(...and now I have all the leaf drop issues from this drought!

Anyone else having this issue? Maybe it is just me... Next year I will water the tree more regularly if it is another very, very dry winter...

13
I planted 2 Persimmon trees last April (chocolate) and May ( Fuyu),...then Hurricane Ian hit Sept 30th and pretty much ripped out all the leaves and beat up the poor little tree. I didn't know if it was still alive but watered it on a regular schedule just in case. A few days ago my Fuyu started sending out some very small leaf flush but my Chocolate (purchased and told was a Fuyu, had no label) shows NO sign of life, I'm not sure if this variety is super sloooow to show signs of life, any one else have their Persimmons flushing and or blooming in Florida?

If anyone knows, how long do I wait before I declare it dead  :o
Also, do flowers appear after the new leaf flush? The new growths are too small to tell now and this is my first time growing Persimmons.

Thanks!!

Every year around this time, the area underneath my Mango trees usually has a good layer of dead mango leaves from the year's growth. Is it okay to leave it for mulch or do you rake it up once a year and discard it? I've always wondered if dead mango leaves are good for mulching the tree, my trees are appx 11-14 years old. Thanks for any help and feedback

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Add Bees to the list of Mango Lover...
« on: July 17, 2021, 10:30:28 AM »
I definitely have my fair share of critters that love my mangoes, but today I found a mango still hanging on the tree with bees munching on in  ::)...I'm not upset, I love bees as they are the best pollinators so I'm willing to share with them  ;)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha Mango...
« on: July 10, 2021, 09:21:06 AM »
Anyone's Maha mangoes ripe yet in Florida? All of mine are still green.

Most of my Glenns are gone, just a few left...a little bit more Cogshall left and of course my Keitt are still green( mine usually ripens in Aug/Sept).

I'm planning on picking the Mahas as soon as I see some light yellowing and finish ripening in the house to beat the critters from eating them all.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What mango am I???
« on: June 02, 2021, 02:29:41 PM »
Saw this fairly decent size tree at a landscaper company , he let me have one of the fruits, it's not ripe yet. The guy that worked there said he had no idea what the variety is, that it was one of the best lol.

It has a pointy tip, first thought it might be a Maha (which I have a tree) but none of my fruits have a pointy tip at the end...looked up Valencia Pride that too wasn't pointy...any ideas??

Thanks in advance!!

Hi everyone, can some one recommend a nursery or website that sells Pineapple guava maybe a self fertile variety like 'Coolidge' somewhere in Florida? None of my local nurseries carry them...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Will this mango ripen in the house?
« on: June 17, 2019, 12:37:17 PM »
For the mango gurus out there I need some advise, I found this mango hanging on the tree, clearly either squirrels or birds or whatever else has been chewing on it. I noticed the mango is already yellow inside. Do you think I can pick some of the mangoes on the tree now and what are the chances of them ripening inside the house? I'm losing about 5 or 6 mangoes daily to squirrels/varmints and I'd rather pick the few that they left me or I'll end up with nothing  :'(...This is a Glenn mango btw. Thanks in advance

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Let the Lychee war begin...
« on: May 21, 2019, 11:44:27 AM »
Found several birds stealing my lychees, lots of remnant pieces and seed on the ground, they are still green and super sour  :(...soon enough the squirrels will be next  :'(

Few months ago...

Today...

22

I have Glenn, Cogshall and a few Maha mangoes on my trees. All are still green but we've had about 25" inches of rain since May 13 so I'm not too excited that the flavor is going to be great, but I still want to eat some before the squirrels eat them all, they've been eating a few since they were the size of a large egg totally green!! I was hoping to pick it mature green and let them ripen on the counter or in a paper bag before they eat them all. If some of yours out there are almost ready maybe mine are not far behind?

Thanks!

23

My mangoes are only about 3" long, completely green and I've already found several of them on the ground chewed up!! I've never seen them attack and chew up mangoes this green and immature before...not sure why they are attacking them this soon. Last year and prior years they waited till it was at least close to maturity about 2 weeks before they are starting to ripen not 6-8 weeks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What type of fruit is this?
« on: May 22, 2017, 08:20:54 AM »
A friend of a friend went to Homestead this weekend and gave this to her, she can't remember what it is and she didn't want it and gave it to  me. She knows I like unusual fruits  :)

All I know is it looks like small guavas but its not.

What is it? How do I know when its ripe and how do I eat it? I did peel one like an apple and it was green inside tasted sort of like a sour apple  :-\
