Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: PVC cages for cold protection
« on: January 02, 2026, 10:14:25 AM »
UPDATE:

As a few on here mentioned, the inside temp of the structures were about 4 degrees COOLER than the ambient temp outside. We hit a low of 29.7 where I'm at (I have a weather station). The two start fruit miraculously made it through with a little stress which is really odd given that it must have briefly hit 25 degrees in the tent.

The phenomena is called Radiational Freeze. It's counterintuitive. Hard to believe.

Flowers on mangos are toast. That's fine. The stress though looks on those in the tent look similar to those I wrapped in frost cloth.

I spent around 600 in materials and 6 hrs of labor. Won't be doing that again. Onward

Sorry you lost your mango blooms, its good the tree survived. You've done a lot in trying to protect them, that's all you can do. I've been in your situation when my trees were young and small. Lost a few in the process. Good luck!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When Does Lychee Tree Flower?
« on: January 01, 2026, 08:47:22 PM »

I am in Florida also and a few of the branches of my Lychee tree are just starting to show some blooms but many more are not. Of course we had some pretty bad frost this morning so not sure how that will affect the blooms and the blooms that haven’t started.

Lycheesonline has some great info on “tips on how to get lychee trees to bloom”. It sounds like the new flush needs a total of  appx 10 weeks from the beginning of a new flush all the to hardening off…before the tree is ready to bloom in winter. For my area they recommend trimming the tree late July and by September I get one last new flush before winter and IF all goes well mine usually blooms around late December/January/ February depending on our weather. That’s been my experience with my tree

Good luck!

Thanks Bovine! Sounds like you’re all set and very well equipped for the next frost/ freeze event. Hopefully we won’t have anymore…but not holding my breath. Still have 8 weeks to go before we’re out of the woods 😞

That’s pretty awesome Bovine …Nice job! What type of light bulb did you use for heat?

We were 38 to 33 degrees with zero winds starting at midnight so almost 9 hours of Frost before the temps reached 40 degrees this morning.  My Glenn is loaded with blooms and Cogshall has about 1/3 of the tree with blooms. I’m sure I’m going to lose most if not ALL the Flowers 😭😰😡

Great Job Kengland!! I remember doing something very similar to your set up when my Mango and lychee tree were young (also in zone 9B).

Best of luck to you but I think you're going to be just fine  :D

Thanks guys for all your help and advise. Since I already cut it I might as well see what happens with this one. I'm sure it won't make it but no harm in trying.

There's always next year  :)

Okay thanks for the advise, obviously it's too late now Lol...I might try it again next Spring and this time leave it on there for 6 months. Appreciate your help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air Layer Lychee Questions after Potting...
« on: August 10, 2025, 03:21:12 PM »

So its been 11 weeks since I did my second try (first one didn't have any roots at all) on Air layering a lychee branch. This one didn't have a lot of roots but it did have some so I potted it up and watered it well. I have a before and after photos of it before I pugged it. Most of everything I read said to remove a lot of the leaves to put all its energy to the roots...my question is did I remove enough? Should I remove more?? I'm planning on putting this in the shade for probably several weeks. If anyone else has any other suggestions or tips please let me know.

Thanks!

I'm in Sebring, about 1.5 south of Orlando and my mangoes are halfway done. The critters have been knocking several a day...about 5 or 6 per tree and 3 or 4 of them are untouched! Haven't had to pick hardly any myself since they've been doing it for me Lol...most of them are green when they knock them done and 100% of them ripen in a card board box on on the counter so obviously they are "mature" green.

Very early for me this year...at the rate it's going by mid July all the mangoes might be all done??  Except for Keitt...I only have a few of those on the tree ( small tree) and even those a couple have fallen untouched and harvesting very early this year.

I got another couple months to go before i can taste some fresh lychees. Looks like Sweetheart will be first this year. It's about thumb size now. Fruitsets is very good so far. Maintaining the fruits is the hard part.

Count your good blessings John  :)...you're lucky! They are getting  smart, I found a few of the clam shell boxes laying on the ground. Not sure if the wind or the squirrels are knocking them down but some of them opened up when they hit the ground and those are empty but a couple of Clam shells still had a few fruits in them but they had a couple of holes, they are trying hard to chew through the plastic to get to the fruits  :o ::). We picked most of the Clams shells last night, just a few left on the tree. The crows are very unhappy, I can hear them "cawing" very loudly as they fly above the tree, I'm sure they are cussing me out for using those clam shells  ;)

They're still coloring up, but I managed to get a bowlful.  Man, they're great.  Sugar syrup.  The last good crop was in 2021, and the tree survived LEM last year.

I need a picker that cuts the branches, which I don't have.  Locals, let me know if you can help me.  You'll be rewarded with lychees!  The fruit is mostly at 25-30 feet.  I have a regular ladder, not a tall one.

Congrats John!! They look great.

After the squirrels, crows and other birds ate appx 40% of my fruits I decided to resort to using Plastic Clam shells to protect the few they left me. So far they are keeping the critters and birds at bay. Should be ready to pick soon, tried a few and they're already sweet enough to eat, just giving them a few more days to get a little sweeter, rain would help. Had 2 days in a row where rain was all around me and never got a drop. Nothing sweetens them up better than rain.

My wife noticed this small Glenn today. Smells peachy - should I pick it and let it fully ripen on the counter top??

YES Definitely pick it...you can pick them several days before they get that color and will ripen on the counter. When I have much greener fruits fall off the tree either on very windy days OR squirrels knock them down when they are climbing all over the trees looking for ripe fruit, I wrap them in newspaper and place them inside a Box usually I have an Amazon Box laying around . I check them every other day or every day and see how they are progressing. I've had to pick a lot of my mangoes this way (mature green) and let them ripen inside the house in a Box if I wanted to get my "fair share" from all the varmints in my backyard  ;) :o

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: RAIN!

I absolutely LOVE Rain but I Had over 10 inches of rain in 5 days...yesterday alone I had over 6 inches...I'm not sure that's going to be good for the fruits on the tree. I'm sure I'm going to see some mango and lychee splitting fruits splitting soon  :o

Thanks Seanny!

Yesterday we had over 6" of rain likely close to 7"!! My rain guage only measures 6" and it was over flowing this morning. This is not good, I'm expecting fruit splitting in lychees and mangoes most likely. I literally had over 10 inches of rain in a total of 5 days...That cannot be good for the fruits. I'll have to wait and see what happens  :o

The Lychees are finally starting to get a little bigger, the 3.5 inches of rain we've had in the last 5 days certainly helped a lot! My Mauritius usually ripens fairly early in the season for me. I've had them ripen end of May...it's looking closer to June before they are ripe this year. Now I just have to fight off all the critters that are waiting to eat them  >:(. The rain should help the mangoes plump up too  :)

For people with trees holding fruit. How often are you watering? Ive got some fruit set on my Sweetheart and ive heard people say to water every day especially while its dry out like it is. I feel like every day is too much. Ive been doing every 2-3 days.

I water my Lychee once a week appx 30 minutes and I put my hose that has a donut hose attachment (with holes) and place it 7 minutes on each 4 sides(N,E,W,S) of the tree for a more even coverage. My sprinkler comes on 2x a week that also supplements the water. Hopefully, this is enough...

I agree every day seems to be a bit overboard and seems wasteful too

I have a Mauritius Lychee tree so maybe that's why its my favorite Lol...but I also like Brewster whenever I can get it. Tasted Emperor not my fave but not bad especially if that is all that's available. Never tasted the others.

My tree this year produced a ton of flowers but the fruit set is quite low in comparison, lots of empty fruit stalks  ::)

One year was a bad drought year and I didn't realize I had to hand water during bloom/fruit set since the tree was mature. Don't give my mango trees any supplemental water since they are all mature, thought it was the same with Lychee...so ALL fruitlets dropped on the ground when they were pea size. The following year I LOST 90% of them to birds, squirrels and raccoons so who knows if I will get any this year  >:(

Thanks GG appreciate your response... I have a Glenn and 2 Cogshall but neither of the fruits that is there now on my trees have that red blush (even the ones that are in full sun. These baby mangoes on that unknown tree's little fruitlets all have red blush on them. Hopefully, when they grow a bit more I can take another picture for better identification. Thanks!

Saw this mango tree when walking near my neigborhood, the house seems vacant now so no one to ask. The tree appears to be some type of Dwarf the trunk is quite short.

Took 2 photos...I can take another in a few weeks when the mangoes are larger if that helps.

Ohhh thanks for that info Sharq. If I had to give papaya a nick name pawpaw would be a cute one  ;)

The color really threw me though, I've grown papaya before and they have never had that coloration so I'm guessing its a different variety than what I'm used to seeing and eating.

Mystery Solved! It is just a boring papaya Lol...as soon as I cut it open I knew what it was. Not sure why she was told it was a paw paw?? Though I will admit I've never seen any papaya with this this shape and the strange/unusual color. I don't eat hardly any papaya so I'm no expert.

Thanks to all that posted and shared their input, appreciate it!

Appreciate all your help and insight. I will post a picture when it’s ripe and cut open .

RS I hope it’s not Bael…after searching google to see what it tastes like it says the taste is  “you either love it or hate it”

Usually when I read that I end up hating it Lol
