Best nursery for Meiwa Kumquat tree?
« on: January 29, 2026, 01:19:24 AM »
Does anyone have any leads on the best nursery in the San Diego area to get a decent sized Meiwa Kumquat tree? I’ve been super busy at work and don’t have time to go nursery hopping like I used to. Thanks in advance!

Simon,

I think Mimosa nursery in Anaheim might have a 15-gallon tree for $150. I bought some other citrus variety 2 wks ago and the guy there, Mike, said these 15-gal trees are going to be moved up in size now, so I got a good deal. The trees he said are over 10yrs old. So, I bought 2 trees, maybe 2" diameter trunk.

I know my local Home Depot (Brea) is currently selling citrus trees in 3-gallon pots for $35 each. The tree itself looks to be the same trunk diameter as the ones I bought at Costco last fall for $39 each in 5-gallon pots. These trees have trunk diameter or 1/2"-3/4" depending on what variety you buy. The largest trunk size will be the pomelo or orange trees. No Meiwa at Home Depot.

You can call Mimosa nursery to see if they have it. They don't let you go into their closed off screen room/greenhouse to protect against ACP. If they have it, and you want the big ones ($150) then I can hold it for you until you come up here to Fullerton.

Hey 70Malibu

Thanks for the heads up! I’m currently trying to avoid the drive to Mimosa due to lack of time. But I may make the trip if I can’t find anything closer. The Walter Anderson Nursery in Poway usually carries a variety of rare citrus but I haven’t been there in months. Thanks again for the info!

Simon

I was at Armstrong Garden Centre in mission valley last weekend and they had 1 or 2 in 5 gallon. I snuck a fruit and at it. Tasty. Maybe call first

Hey jbirdfunk, I ended up calling and visiting 3 Armstrong Nurseries and Walter Anderson Nursery in Poway. The Armstrong nurseries had tiny 2 foot tall trees with 10 small branches in 10-15 gallon containers selling for $199. It looked like a recently up potted 3-5 gallon plant but it was healthy so I picked one up.

WAN had a big one but it was on standard rootstock and I was looking for Semidwarf rootstock. WAN also had tiny grafted Meiwas in sleeves for $60. I might pick up a few to give away to the in laws for Chinese New Year.

Cool that you found it. Walter Anderson got shiranui and a bunch of other harder to find citrus in sleeves recently.
