Title: Florida Hakip Lychee leaf growth
Post by: fruit4me on April 13, 2022, 12:16:34 PM
Hello everyone. For those of you growing this variety, can you please post some close up pictures of the leaf growth in different stages? Thank you. I want to compare to the one I'm growing.

That is not FL Hak Ip. New growth is yellow or greeninsh yellow on that variety--never red or redish like your picture shows. Many suspect that FL Hak Ip is really Fei Zi Xiao that was mis labeled. Maybe you have the real Hak Ip?

I have a Hakip I got from Hopkins in Florida and it does not have the
new red growth. Several people insist the Hakip is the same as Sweetheart?
I am trying to grow both trees but my sweetheart got hit by the cold and
is still dying off? Not sure if it will make it yet

Looks kinda emperor lychee.
Mike if your lychee is still dying look for a frost ring of dead bark around 8 inches from the ground(scrape it for green).IF it has dead bark you may still have time to re root it by piling dirt around tree trunk ,like a air layer keep it moist mulch on top of soil

Some people will probably take issue with me on this, but we have grown them for close to 20 years now and they are different (but only slightly). Confusion is added by the fact that and so many people have been saying that they are the same (and selling them that way) that a lot of people don't even know what they really have. SH is probably a HI seedling. The biggest difference that I have noticed consistently is that Hak Ip can get a pronounced off flavor as it gets over ripe. Sweet Heart does not have this tendency. Also, I would say that SH produces more fruits per panicle on average. SH has the same new growth color as FL Hak Ip. Based on photos and descriptions from Hawaii and Australia what is sold as Ohia in Florida is very similar to the actual Hak Ip.

Gosh darn it! I was really hoping it would be Florida’s Hakip. I’ve tasted the fruit before from a tree I use to have. It’s definitely different from the Sweetheart that I have growing now. I prefer the flavor of Florida’s Hakip over Sweetheart.
