I doubt this type of avocado agrees. I recommend extremely heavy mulching-like 12 inches- that extends way out beyond the drip line to reduce watering requirements.

Anyone have care instructions? Im rooting a male and female cutting. Are they more cold tolerant than say solo or Mexican papaya? What do I need to know?

TIA

Thats great! Did you hand pollinate? My flowers just dry up in the winter.

Seems like these are flowering in the middle of winter for me in San Diego area, fruit isn't setting. Has anyone fruited these in S. CA.?

Here is a review of this Rose Apple selections by Brian Lavin (from his post on FaceBook):

"Had a number of Rose Apples on this trip.  The best came from someones yard in West LA area.  I was surprised at how good they were.  They basically taste sweet with strong rose flavor.  Frankly they are better then any wax jambu I've tried."

Thank you!
The Roger Meyer accession came from Margaret Frane, who received it from the late Roger Meyer.  I got this accession from her a number of years ago. The tree is a little too tropical for Davis, but was flowering already for a few years for me.  The fruits are supposed to be excellent and I believe Margaret described them somewhere in the Fruit Gardener or on Facebook.  If I find her posts, or the article, I'll link to it here.

Totally agree. It was my second time buying from her last November. Bought some Guaruja Red pitanga, Female #4 Kei apple and feijoia scions.

The only thing that piqued my interest is the "Roger Meyer" rose apple as I only have the air layered one Lara Farms sells. Does anyone have any more info of the Roger Meyer variety?
Hi Marta, glad to see you on the forum. I'm super stoked that I was able to grab a couple of the rose apple cuttings. What method of grafting/rooting would you recommend for these? I have attempted it last year with some scions purchased off of ebay, but none took. Thanks.

Same question. Are we talking easy to root like fig or grapes or kei apple or would they require more input (misting, root heating, ect? I have a couple trees I can graft on to as well but I assume they would graft like most trees.

Chopping:

Arabian White Guava-Hard and tastes like pine cones...really all guavas except lemon and strawberry guava. The others just aren't sweet and juicy enough.

Pitomba-slowly die

Sweet limes-insipid. Not sure I get sweet limes. Its like nonsalty salt...whats the point?

Tamarillo-Cant keep them alive.

Suruga persimmon-fruit falls off fully formed but still green?

Sunberry ( Solanum oocorum )-If you think Kei apples are dangerous these things are lethal. 2 years and grew to massive plant with hypodermic needles all over...and no fruit.

Maybe Chopping:

Valentine Pummelo-just sweet, no distinct flavor.

Dragon fruit that require hand pollinating. Aint nobody got time for that!

Curious if the rose apple scions can be rooted or are they typically grafted?

Thanks, Any idea when to harvest in San Diego CA? It looks ready but the link you sent says  "will pass fresh fruit standards in early September of most years"...not sure what that means but if it means ripe in September I have a hard time imagining that fruit hanging on til then.

Interesting. Any thoughts on the second picture? Does that look like a US Seedless surprise tangelo? If so when is harvest season typically in S California?

Looking for help identifying these 2 citrus. The first reminds me of sumo but I have a sumo tree and there is no green on the fruit right now and the bumps are more smooth than what is in the first photo. The second photo is marked US Seedless Surprise, which is a tangelo, and it may be correctly labeled (although wanting confirmation). Also, if it is US Seedless surprise when is harvest season in San Diego CA area?

Thanks in advance for your help!

My native/original YangMei is flowering now

Pinkturtle-What makes it native? Is it grafted? Seedling? or M. Californica, Pennsylvanica, or Cerifera? My seedlings and grafted plants have been full sun without problem, I see you have a shadecloth, is that for thisplant? Maybe why theres so little mature vegetation?

I only have some very, very small seedlings of Dialium indum and one as of this week seedling of Dialium schlechteri finally popped up after many months. I haven't tasted them, but got the seeds on a whim. Glad I did if the fruit is that good--by description it sounds like something I like, which is why I snagged them.

Mind if I ask where you purchased the fruit?

I planted orange pulp guava seeds from seed hunter in the fall of 2021 and have a healthy guava tree now. I haven't got fruit from it yet but if it turns out like the picture they had up Ill be happy!

I bought Japanese Goldfinger and Sapphire (aka Moondrop) from Twobears on Etsy. She said the Sapphire is grafted on 1103P rootstock, I couldnt see a definitive graft site but maybe it was a good graft(?) I can say they came in bareroot and appear alive (green under bark)...what variety they are...I can only hope they are what I ordered. Seller did seem knowledgeable regarding grapes for what thats worth.

Ive got a couple grafted yangmeis from China that have healthy growth coming from the rootstock as well. I hate to just prune it without using it. I have a bunch of M Californica, Pennsylvanica, and Cerifera I may graft them onto. Curious if they tend to use one particular variety of yangmei for rootstock in China over others?

That was me. Same issue, and to compound the frustration people would state they had no trouble getting through to them via phone everytime they called...I had tried many many times and just left voicemails that were never answered (and emails that never were responded to). This was a prepaid plant from months ago so Im not sure I would have been successful canceling the order with my credit card company. I ended up calling them from my wifes phone and got through to someone. I explained how ridiculous it was to spend the time I had to spend to talk with someone just to find out where my paid for plant (Cherilata as well) was. The man I spoke with explained that some numbers show up as spam and they get a lot of spam calls so no one answers them...Why no call backs or email response, I don't know but long story short, they sent my plant the next week and it arrived in good condition. I'd call them from a different phone number and see if you get through. Best of luck!

Ive got one in San Diego County and it seems to produce fruits-full size-that remain green then drop around Sept-Oct...so jury is out in S CA, at least for me. Also, it doesnt seem to love the heat.

Ill check it out. I definitely paint exposed bark on the mangoes. Curious what you use for paint? Watered down latex or the milk paint or something else?

23
Orkine-Karen Michelle seems like a good candidate although I would be surprised if anyone has experience growing and fruiting it in S CA. 1st I heard of it. Ill have to keep my eye on it.

Spaugh-Ill have to research Cotton Candy. Seems smaller and later season than ST but as long as it makes it before the cold Im all for extending my season. I have heard so many recommend planting out seedlings that I have a bunch (6+) seedlings planted out (OS and LZ seeds)...they're my insurance plan if the grafted mangoes just don't thrive!

24
I think Ive seen you post that before. OK...Sweet Tart it is!... although I do have a small tree of Sweet Tart already Id like to jump start this already slow process of growing fruit producing mango trees. Ill likely leave the one keitt already grafted and hope for extended warm fall-winters. If you have a second runner up I should be considering let me know and thank you, ST checks all the boxes and then some!

25
Yikes! That was the top contender too....hmm, thoughts on Pickering? any others (decent size and not late maturing)?
