I ran some LED grow lamps on some herbs and pineapples in the GH during winter. Yeah they suck a lot of power but it does what you need it to do.  The herbs come out way better during winter in the GH than it does during the summer here where its too hot.

I think keeping in a pot is maybe overly ambitious.  Its a large tree.  You will need very large pots to get it to make seeds.

its a nice tree, I planted a few around for shade.  they are very popular here.  Jacaranda also. 

they get huge though just an FYI.

Fuerte is a classic. I thought people generally liked that variety. Why don't you like it? Here in my part of Peru it is the only other grafted option besides Hass that the local nurseries provide.

fuerte tastes pretty good but the skin is thin and the tree is massive.  And it has sporatic fruit set here.  it can set tons of fruit one year then go many years little to no fruit.  I think hass is better in every regard.  just my opinion.  Theres a reason they are no longer grown commercially here. 

sometimes its the tree and fruiting habit etc, sometimes its the fruit thats the problem.  Fuertes problems have more to do with the tree than the fruit.

i think you are right, reed is slightly better than nabal. 

GEM, lamb, sir prize are all inferrior to regular hass and gwen.  Just my honest opinion.

GEM is a nice tree and makes loads of fruit.  BUT once the fruit sits on your counter and gets soft they look terrible and then you eat it and oil level is just not there and the flesh color is slighty off.  Soes not have the same nice green color of hass.

im going to do a video where I show these trees and I chop them all down.

I think lamb is not a great fruit.  Its a bad substitute for regular hass.  Yeah it does grow and produce well and fruit can be passed off as hass but they are really a B grade imposter IMO.  I think you are better off with reed for late season fruit.

Carmen is a hass tree that has a mutation that makes it fruit more.  The fruit and everything else look and taste exactly like regular hass. 

I have the sharwil and lamb and carmen and hass and whatever other ones available.  I would really prefer take cuttings in january though.  This really is not the right time to do grafting unless you are pretty skilled at it.  You can just graft right away around mid to late January and the scions will heal nicely and start growing in March.

I have found that sharwil and reed can be grafted in January and hass should be done in February about 1 month later than the others. 

I would say come get the scions but its like 3 hours south to where I live from san fernando.

You should thin the fruit so that they are not right next to one another.  Keep the best looking ones and the ones further down the brqnches so thry are not hanging far out. 

The plants look like thry are being watered well.  They dont need tons of water or fertilizer.  Just an occasional fertilize with avocado/citrus type food or something else well rounded. 

My experience is they dont really self thin.  I saw other people say they do but has not been the case here.  What I saw was they are just smaller fruit if not thinned.

When you speak with their insurance company you can tell them this one is the ultra rare variegated one that people pay 500$ per cutting for on ebay.

Thats because of the latitude like you are saying.  Not as much heat and sunshine as here.  Wait until October.  Hopefully they are ready by your cold season otherwise its going to be a 2 year deal to ripen them.  You are probably better off growing types with a shorter span like Carmen.

Shit happens.  The tree trimmers Im sure didnt mean to hit your stuff.  It sucks but on the grand scheme of things its small stuff.  Ask the neighbor if they can try to have the trimmers not let it happen again and forget about it.

Where do you live?  If you want to come get some hass scions I will give you some.  But winter and early spring is the better time to do avocado grafting. 

Hass is king for a reason too my friend.  It still kills most of the overhyped stuff out there.  I think maybe Carmen is a good option too.  It seems to fruit even more profusely than hass.   Its basically a mutation of hass the fruits more.

I just wanted to throw it out here that although lamb is a great growing tree and makes loads of fruit, the fruit just are not that great.  Very annoying to have to top work so many trees.  Especially ones that are patented and hyped up.

coco does suck up water really easy.  i wouldnt worry about the salts for a pineapple plant.  you can use pretty much anything for pineapple plants.  you really want it to drain well which coco doesnt do but a little wont hurt.

Its better to just pick 1 bud.  Trust me it may feel wrong or feel like risk taking but its definitely the way to do it. 

I would cut the bottom branch off.  And cut right above the 2nd lowest branch to remove the top 2 buds. 

When you leave 1 bud, it will grow way faster.
