Temperate Fruit Discussion / Odd looking feijoa
« on: September 04, 2023, 12:02:01 AM »
I have a feijoa with new leaves that have a reddish tinge to them. When they harden they have a darker green and glossier sheen than the other seedlings I bought in the bunch with it.  The other seedlings have normal whitish tinged new leaves.

Anyone else have a feijoa with these odd characteristics?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Good fruit for grafting to serotina
« on: July 28, 2023, 03:37:54 AM »
In Alabama I'm seeing the native type cherry trees sprouting around the yard, and they are quite vigorous.

I get about 800-1200 Chill hours in Southeast Alabama, but the major concern is foremost disease resistance against blights, and second, graft compatibility with the wild types. Then fruit quality. Some prunus are extant, so pollinators are available.

What varieties would you recommend grafting?

Citrus General Discussion / Nursery Review Bright Leaf Nursery
« on: August 31, 2022, 02:40:09 PM »
Just as a heads up they don't ship to several states including California.

I was looking to plant some cold-hardy citrus in Alabama, and was really excited to plant some LeexNova.
I had read research from University of Florida that US812 rootstock was looking really good for LeexNova, so I reached out to them and was told Briteleaf has several trees. I reached out to Briteleaf, and was able to obtain two of those and a Keraji on C35. I'm very excited, the price is good, the trees are of great quality, and Shipping was fast.

I didn't receive a tracking number, but they shipped on Monday like they said they would and the trees showed up in excellent condition.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Don't Forget to Flush
« on: March 02, 2022, 06:16:53 PM »
I noticed several of my drip irrigation lines weren't emitting any water, yearly upkeep of opening the ends returned water flow to all but one tree. That line is getting dissected for further investigation.

Citrus General Discussion / Glen Navel?
« on: February 24, 2022, 03:24:28 PM »
I have been caring for this navel orange tree for several years, and I have been unable to Identify it all this time.

The tree is much more vigorous than the Washington it was planted near, it produces many more fruit, but they are smaller by a third, have much thinner, bumpy skin, non-protruding navels, and the fruit ripen several weeks before the Washington, and generally have much lower acid levels than Washington, and they hang until May.

They also get shiny/oily skin early in the season, and what I assumed was caused by leaking nectar, they also get a strong vanilla aroma to the peels. I found out this year I was mistaken, as the trees have yet to bloom, but already the peels smell amazing.

This led me down the rabbit hole, where I found this thread.

Now I'm thinking this must be the correct variety. Does anyone else grow this one? Seem like the right ID?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Yellow Mulberry
« on: July 15, 2020, 10:48:46 PM »
I first tasted this mulberry at a CRFG meeting some time ago, and took interest because of the Pina Colada flavor.

The member who brought it lost the name tag for it, but grafted it to his tree many moons ago.

The fruit are the same size as a Pakistani, but are white when unripe, and yellow when ripe. They taste just regular-sweet at the white stage, and have a flavor worth seeking only at yellow stage.

Any idea as to the name of this UNK?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona Mosaic?
« on: June 05, 2020, 10:36:23 PM »
I couldn't find any information about a mosaic disease specific to annona, maybe this is a viroid from a different species.

Does anyone have an annona displaying growth with this pattern or know what could cause it?

The interesting thing is that similar to FMV it mostly affects lower, older, and more shaded growth, the canopy at large seems unaffected.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Mislabeled Pluot?
« on: May 27, 2020, 07:49:39 PM »
In one of my first years as a CRFG member I picked up a grafted tree from the opportunity table. It was labeled as Flavor King and it was grafted on apricot seedling.

I've only ever seen apricot style leaves above the graft.

I recently visited another member, and their Flavor King has Plum-like leaves.

It blooms exactly in time with Flavor Grenade.

Is it mislabeled?

If it weren't for the bloom corresponding with Flavor Grenade, I would be thinking it was Flavor Delight.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Indian Mango Season in So-Cal

Thought I would save you a trip, went to Mirmar C&C today, and they said there won't be any Indian mangoes this year, the importation was shut down.

Citrus General Discussion / "Tangerine" ID
« on: May 07, 2020, 03:39:30 AM »
I will add photos, but I was hoping this one might be identifiable on description alone.

The mandarin was sold as a 'tangerine' at a local Japanese market, price 2.99/lb.

The shape is round nearly spherical, the skin is quite thick for a mandarin, and adheres well. The skin is leathery and deep orange/red. The oil glands leave the surface rough and pebbled. There is some pith. Some fruit showed what appeared to be a navel. I purchased it thinking it was supernova, just super late.

The aroma is tropical and striking. the flesh is soft and juicy. The pith is unfortunately quite bitter in the realm of grapefruit. The juice was somewhat sweet while being quite tart.

The fruit is seedless and had 10 segments.

Any ideas? I love the flavor, but hate the bitter taste. Might be worth soaking the peeled fruit in water to try to remove the bitterness.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Edgar Parentage
« on: October 02, 2019, 06:50:58 AM »
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkGZypZj2jo
Right around the 13:00 mark.

Can anyone in the know confirm that Edgar is actually a Zill 80 seedling?

I'm curious about the resin flavor towards the skin.
Is it similar to the flavor Kent gives off when overripe?
I'm really interested in this flavor when it coincides with peak brix, like it did in one sample of 36-8 I tried. By the time Kent gives off this flavor the brix has already fallen too far, so it is seen as an 'off flavor', but in the 36-8 sample, there was enough sweetness to make it very appealing, at least to me.

I searched for reviews of Edgar's flavor, but didn't find any direct comparisons.
Found a good one.

Have you tried the Edgar? Supposed to be a Edward x Gary cross. I got to try a few at Walter's. It was similar to a carrie but without the 'funk' and mixed with a keittish/kentish flavor. I topworked a limb on my Keitt to Edgar :-).

If I take this and use it in conjunction with the other more generic descriptions, I'm getting "Carrie-like spice with Keitt turpene profile instead of Carrie Pinesol".
Not sure if that's even remotely accurate, but the best I got.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Exotica Lottery
« on: September 30, 2019, 10:36:36 PM »
This year I needed some rootstock for grafting, and happened to be near enough Exotica to grab some rootstocks.

They sell small seedlings for pretty cheap, around 10 dollars.

When grafting, I noticed a few of them had pretty interesting sap smells, some had strong indochinese aromas (like a parsnip), others had strong citrus aromas. One in particular had a orange/vanilla smell, the graft failed, so I will grow this one out.

If you have space and want to gamble Gary Zill style, you might try crushing some leaves the next time you are at exotica, and picking some seedlings to try out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shipping mangoes
« on: September 30, 2019, 12:24:03 AM »
If necessary, I will send messages to those who do it commercially, but I thought I would open up the question for anyone to answer.

I have a lot of relatives on the east coast, and I would like to ship them fresh fruit. Most fruit has to be picked at soft ripe stage for palatability purposes, so I am focusing on annona and mango in order to have something that will make it that far.

As I understand it, many mangoes need to be picked at full ripeness in order to taste reasonably good, so I'm trying to avoid planting those types if possible.

I'm also trying to plant a variety of flavors.

So far I'm looking at these.

In the spice category I'm looking at Kesar, but I'm considering Ugly Betty and Super Julie.
In the citrus category I'm looking at Mallika, but I'm considering Dusheri and Lemon Zest.
In the indochinese category I'm looking at Maha Chanok and Sweet Tart, but I'm considering CAC/COC.
In the coconut category, I think only M4 has confirmed to be pickable at shipping stage, but I'm considering any possibilities.
In the resin category, I'm looking at Val-Carrie, but considering STMaui and Ugly Betty again.
In the classic category, I'm looking at Aloha and Carla but considering Southern Blush.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions? I'm trying to select mainly firmer fleshed mangoes for this, I hear that E4 really is too soft to ship, and there are others I will consider adding if they are good shippers like Southern Blush or perhaps Ugly Betty.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Creme Brulee Mango
« on: September 21, 2019, 11:02:14 PM »
I omitted the diacritics to make it easier to turn up in a search.

I haven't heard much about this mango this year, but it was getting rave reviews last year. Can anyone comment on the flavor of the aforementioned mango this year?

I grafted one up based on online reviews, and it is pushing. It will be a few years before I am actually able to comment on its taste unless I get to try it before I can fruit it myself.

I'm very interested in growing a mango with a dense creamy texture(starchy) like p-22 but with an Indian spice character.

Creme Brulee seems to be the only mango I have read about that fits the bill.
Unless anyone has experience with a more qualified mango.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB E4 scion or seed
« on: September 18, 2019, 07:58:05 PM »

If any is available, please contact via PM.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya Fruit Shape
« on: September 15, 2019, 07:13:03 PM »
I noticed that the shape of the skin on annonas is often used to refer to the fruit, and it is often used in ways that confuse the fruit identity or cause confusion as to the proper fruit.

I found some info which should help with regards to the name of the fruit related to the shape.

Each fruit can vary in skin category for undetermined reasons (most likely pollen source), but usually the fruit fall into one of the five major categories, or somewhere between two of them.

Some of the info in that link conflicts with info I had found previously.

There appears to be some discrepancy between tuberculate and mammilate.
