Hello all.  We were photographing stick insects over the weekend and in the Pandanus forests we came across a jewel of a variegated specimen.  the rod crew had even just cut it while clearing paths.

Normally I wouldnt want to take a cut this way, but for this reason we must.  It is about 10 cm thick and no roots.  but it does have some cut thin roots.

Any particular tricks with these guys?  I live in their native range so the weather should be fine.  I have it under 50% shade cloth for the moment.    Have cut most the leaves away to avoid dehydration..

Iwas thinking about the sand.  they grow almost explosively close totthe ocean.  I wonder if the salt spray would somehow help prevent certain fubgi/bacteria that may cause rot?  Trying to decide to get eiver sand or back sand (mostly coral/shell here)

Worried about rot.  Appreciate any thoughts as this stem I really want to survive and get propagated for the trade.

Was hoping if someone recognized these guys.  Very soft white hairs on silvery green foliage.  White flowers and the fruit faces upwards much like birds eye.

Thanks for any help :)

Seeking some advice from other growers.  We grow in fields (commercial) a few varieties that are well suited to our climate.

We get down to the mid teens in winter with high winds and high humidity.  We get up to 40 in summer.  Typhoons are the main variable.  We dont flood as w have worked out drainage, but weeks of rain can keep things wet.....

We are certified organic, so cannot spray.

The varieties we are having the biggest trouble with are:

Ghost pepper (summer typhoons)

Jalapenos (having year round issues of poor growth)

Serrano (same as jalapeno)

Habanero (constant fruit rot in wet season)

Anyone else in the same boat?  We can redo fields and try different ways, just cannot use chemicals.

All seem to be water related issues.

We use raised rows with AG fabric as a mulch with pipes inserted under the plastic for irrigation.  Recently we are using rice hulls in between to limit weeds, but just started using these.  Have been having issues for a few years now.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Solid root cuts, rooted cuttings or plants.  Not interested in many ofthe commonly sold other species (fakes).  We need true Piper methysticum.

Shipping to Taiwan.  Phytosanitary certificate preferred, but not required.

We can either buy or trade.  Lots of fruit, herbs, spices and mediicnal plants to offer. If trading, we can provide phytosanitary certificate if you also provide one, or at standard cost if you cannot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / when ro plant out snakeskin fruit?
« on: July 22, 2019, 01:33:11 AM »
Worried a bit about them getting scorched in the sun.  Is it possible to plant them out in open fields, without shade?  Or should i plant some papayas (easier to kill than bananas) around each one?

They are only about 7 months old so maybe too small still.

Hello all.

A question on infection.

I am familiar with different methods of Piper propagation.  We cant use seeds. Now we are sticking with layering but we keep getting a crippling percent of black rot.  Even on potted plants that i root onto other pots (nodes already have root buds), they start to rot as well...im a bit stuck on why and how to fix it.  Would really appreciate some help if anyone has any experience :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Roselle types and cultivars
« on: October 22, 2018, 08:34:37 AM »
I am looking for some good online resources, or your personal experience, on different Roselle types andtgeircalyx form, color taste etc.

I see some.studies.done on  various types, but Google the name not much information.  This  will be our third year growing and we are looking to  select and try breeding improved types.

Currently we are growing 7 distinct types from Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia. Next year we  will ha e an experimental field to plant .out new types for observation and pollen donors :)

Would love to see what all people are or have grown, as it is the season.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / whats in season in Sarawak?
« on: September 26, 2018, 03:24:55 PM »
Hi guys, been away from this board for a while.  I will be flying in to Kuching next week after some work, and will spend a couple weeks in Sarawak to see some forests and photograph things.  Been to sabah a few times and penninsular many times.  Absolutely love malaysia!  We will also fly to KK for a few days before heading home to taiwan.  This is my first time to sarawak though, and am.super excited about the plants and animals we can hopefully see!

I am wonderig what fruits might be seen at this time?  My last trip to sabah we got to eat 4 wild durian species which was amazing as never got to try them before.

Any pointers on where to sniff out great feuit?  The last few years have taken me down a spice passion.  Hoping to also look for cool pipers, gingers etc as well if anyone knows some must taste spices in the region :)

Be really neat to hear from a fruit or plant nut in the region.  Or if anyone is there would be fun to grab a bite, tea, fruit binge :)

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Do poeple in the west eat gingko nuts?
« on: January 21, 2018, 10:38:11 AM »
Curious if they are eaten there.  Either as a nut with beer, or mixed in rice dishes, or...?

I plan to grow a bunch in Canada soon as they have AMAZING yellow leaves in fall and taste great, but they stink and not sure if people htere are familiar or keen on the nut as a food.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Good ground cover species to smother weeds?
« on: January 14, 2018, 11:51:03 PM »
What is people's opinions on relatively short, under a foot or so, ground covers to grow in place of rampant weeds?

I've been combating weeds for years and sweet potato does ok but tends not to handle trampling on it well. Tropics weeds are bad as we all know.  I use plastic mulch in rows, but because here uses flood irrigation via trenches there is no plastic in the trenches, so weeds grow a solid meter a month.  I don't spray, need to stay organic.  So looking for something stronger than even sprawling morning glories like sweet potato and water spinach.  You guys have any good ones?  I'm not against hand weeding while the new cover gets established.

Cheers for any thoughts.

Where in continental US never gets freezing temps?  Seems Florida still gets pretty cold in winters.  How about extreme south?  Is it possible to grow truly super tropical things in continental USA?  I always thought before Florida never froze, but I'm seeing it differently.
