I follow Wikifruit discussions, thank you for the insights and knowledge base provided. I like to dip in seasonally when we are looking for planting advice and seed supplies

1% is almost nothing, but it is not to forget, because I've read some articles saying that is a forbidden drink for the AAs.
(BTW in Bulgaria, most of the beer is more than 4,5% alc).

It is really low alcohol ~ 0.3%, you would have to drink a lot of it to feel any buzz, you would probably throw up first from the probiotics or bacterium as they are commonly known.

It's got to be strawberries!

U shud try neem oil & dr bronner sal suds...this will help ya...

No to chemical pesticides.

But Neem oil is a chemical pesticide, it's called Azadirachtin and it's really bad for foraging bee populations.

Our chicken waste isn’t wasted, but put to use as organic fertiliser. Egg shells go into the compost pile, too, and they make an excellent, enriching addition we use them for an awesome homemade tomato fertiliser for our organic food at home and for our urban farm organic grocery service

Are you going to grow a shrub or a tree? I have seen these trees in Porto in Portugal. They were selling alcohol brewed from the fruits.

I only  tried the fruits in a jam they make a delicious snack with it.

#it would be lovely to see some more photos.

Recipes / Pomegranate and meat

Pomegranate goes well with everything from pork chops to lamb to flank steak. The sour-sweetness of pomegranate juice or pomegranate molasses works well in any simple marinade, and for added flavour, a sprinkling of seeds on top of the cooked dish, it's gotta be good for you right?

For those of you who remember everything you learned from Biology, its the same thing that happens when the cell divides, the phase where the chromosomes get equally divided and have pulled by the spindle fibres to opposite ends of the cell; here, the "parent cell" begins slowly splitting into two "daughter cells".  The complete division has not taken place and you have a sort of Siamese berry.

I bet the slug enjoyed it! We supply office snacks and we are growing strawberries for our clients this summer. We often remind them that we love the imperfections of mother nature!

That sounds like fun for the grand kids, it might be fun to try a cucumber. We are mostly trying to grow a load of berries this year as our bushes mature. We are trying to get strawberries going all through the summer and we have about 13 apple trees. The price of fruit has just taken a real hit here due to the weakened loonie so this may well become profitable if not, just tastier  - otherwise i might just try and sell square watermelons!!

Hey Munahilin, I did see these recently, though you are right it's not my photo. We don't actually sell Watermelons either so not trying to advertise them. Also we only deliver to Vancouver so really no point in advertising to forum members.

I do love the forum though. My husband and I use it to expand our knowledge base as we have invested and coop a city centre urban farm - city fruit for city workers. We are looking at common problems with fruit growing and diseases. I loved your post about sweet sunrise strawbs, I always find fruit for thought.

Just in time for Christmas I noticed these in my local supermarket. But here's the thing - do they actually taste any better?. I dont think I can afford to find out. Apparently the melons are harvested like this to reduce shelf space in Asia. Really?
Has anyone grown melons like this before?

Recipes / Fruit Vodka
« on: November 09, 2015, 11:33:36 PM »
I love the Fruit tea vodka and it reminded me of my university days when we used to make Vodka watermelons. Slowly, over a few hours add a bottle of Vodka to a Watermelon through a hole in the top - it takes maybe half a day to absorb. Then put a tap in the bottom or cut it into chunks (use a bowl)

I prefer the Black mulberries, they are more flavorful and tasty than their fellow white, and red varieties. Their peak season is May through August, while the latter two varieties can be readily available until late spring.

I agree with you Brian, we haven't seen the fruit name change here in Canada but it cannot be bad thing for the fruit industry as a whole. I do prefer the name mandarin though!

Mix together 1/4 cup butter, brown sugar and passion fruit juice and pour into pan, turning so mixture covers bottom. Set aside.
Cream together 1/2 cup of butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beat well.
Mix together dry ingredients. Add flour mixture, alternately with milk, to butter mixture. Stir in vanilla and almond extracts.
Pour into prepared cake pan. Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until cake pulls away form sides of pan. Let cool for five minutes before inverting onto serving plate.

The heat wave and water restrictions have delivered a great crop, but its really pushing the price of fruit up here in Vancouver, Canada. With our season nearly over we are looking at buying our fruit from SoCal again and it ain't cheap It is good fruit though.

Hi, i'm Sarah, I work for an awesome fruit delivery company in Vancouver and am hoping to learn more about fruit

What a cool company!  Welcome.  How long has this company been in business?

Thank you, we have been in business for 2 years now and we supply a lot of fruit to a lot of office workers. We would really like to expand and keep it fresh. We give fruit back to society through our over stock donation scheme and our fruit-to schools scheme is helping to educate the next lot about fruit. Fruit is awesome. Its great to be amongst you and read your thoughts.

Would love to know if it had any health benefits - what do the natives use it for?

Totally cool, wish we could get those limes in Vancouver

After reading a lot on this forum about the different mango flavors (spicy, mild, etc), I have to ask, how do Caribbean mangos differ in flavor to Florida mangos?

Raul

Hi Raul

Florida has the best selected varieties in the world. Caribbean mangos tend to be stringy, spicy( yodo in Cuba)  less complex. There are great selections from the Caribbean and Mexico but most folks grow their mangos from seeds down there.

I love the different notes in the spicy and stringy mangoes, subtle but really noticeable. You are right though, ~Florida does have the better fruits.
