Bumping this up as mango season is starting up.  I'd be very grateful if anyone has any Malika.  I would buy or can trade mangos.  I have Venus & Guava mango for trade.

I've never had a Guava mango, but planted a tree based on the wonderful reputation.  I have my first fruit, and it looks like I should pick it.  Except the stem doesn't look brown.  Can anyone chime in and let me know if this one looks ready?  What do you look for to make sure it's picked at the correct stage?

The few I picked last year were not difficult as the color changed from solid green to having a mild yellow-green blush, similar to Carrie. It may be that I got lucky with the few I picked and the majority stay solid green but keep an eye out for a slight color change. I had a harder time picking Peach Cobbler and M-4.

Agreed - the best ones I had last year had a mild yellow blush.  That could be the trick!

Hello,

This post is premature as mango season is just kicking off in South Florida, but this season, I'm really interested in trying Malika mangos, so I know whether to graft onto my trees.  If you have any that you'd be willing to sell me, please send me a pm.

Thank you,
Michael

They normally come around in July in prior years.  Here's a video from the man himself describing when to pick them:  https://business.facebook.com/156138551093407/videos/428600865243617/

I've had some truly excellent Sugarloaf, and others were just average.  They do seem finicky to pick, but when you get a good one, it tastes like a virgin pina colada.

BTW, if anyone has any Malika mangos in the South Florida area, please send me a pm.  I'd like to try the fruit before grafting onto my trees.

Thank you very much for sharing Joe!  Anwar Ratol and Chaunsa were the varieties being mentioned.  Are there any growers here in South Florida with scions or even fruit?  Would love to know how these varieties perform in a new climate, and how delectable they are  :P

Not sure if being trolled or not...but I'll bite.  Why would this "solution" supersede a free Google search?

Question - is Purple Haze Self Fertile or Self Sterile?  I'm reading conflicting information and if it's Self Sterile, I'd like to understand what other dragonfruit variety would complement it to pollinate it?  I most likely wouldn't hand pollinate so would need something that flowers at that same time.  Hopefully this is all a moot point and it's Self Fertile.

Question - I'm still a dragonfruit newb and looking for recommendations on an addition.

So far I'm growing a palora variety, sugar dragon variety, and purple haze variety I luckily received from Spaugh.  I have room for 1 more df cutting.

Ideally, I'd like a variety that is very productive, sweet, delicious, and self-pollinating.  I'll also be growing it in the same garden bed as the palora, sugar dragon, and purple haze, so I don't want a variety that's super aggressive that may interfere with the root biology of its neighbors.

ANY suggestions is most appreciated!

For whatever it's worth, I think OE is susceptible to becoming washed out from the rains.  I had several this year when it was raining a lot, and they all tasted watered down.  However, I had 1 that was superb (probably got it between the rains).  Other varieties like Sweet Tart don't seem to suffer from the same fate & they both ripen during the peak of rainy season.  I still quite like OE and have it grafted, and if I had multiple trees, I would keep 1 just in case there isn't a heavy rainy season.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Purple Haze Dragonfruit
« on: August 04, 2021, 06:55:58 PM »
Hello,

For local pickup (or I can deliver), in South Florida area, I'm selling a long Purple Haze piece of dragonfruit (almost 4').

Long story short, I didn't have it supported well, wind from the bad weather toppled it over and broke a huge piece off.  I'm selling for $30 to a good home!

Send me a pm if interested.

Cheers,
Mike

Pickering and Little Gem both do relatively well in the fridge if close to fully ripe when placed there.

I second Pickering.  Have had them 1 month after and they still tasted good.

Thank you Orkine for pointing that out - good eyes!  I'm familiar with the Walter Zill type graft, and Sapote's modification.  I got 2/3 success using Sapote's method this year, so was quite pleased with that result especially considering first attempt.

For this tree, should we do a side cleft graft on the new shoots like Chris or follow the Walter Zill / Sapote style of graft assuming we can find a large enough band to compress the budwood onto the mother tree cambium?
