Soil looks too dry. They will lose their leaves in winters if not happy. Will regrow in right conditions. Don't worry too much.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Jaboticaba45 2023 Plant Want to Buys

The Broward County and Palm Beach County Rare Fruit Councils both had fall plant sales with all these and everything else you could want. Should consider planning something for their spring sales when dates are released; your gas money will cost significantly less than shipping!
Always a good plan but I have school then ::). I'm sure I can find most if not all at a random nursery when I go down, but just trying to maximize what I can get in FL.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Jaboticaba45 2023 Plant Want to Buys
« on: December 22, 2022, 09:49:44 PM »
Hey all,
Here's what I want to buy or trade this coming year.
Of course it's the worst time to send stuff, but this is for the future year:
Mango
-sweet tart
-lemon zest
-ppk
-sugarloaf
Any variety of lychee I don't have (Mauritius, sweet tart, hak ip)
lemon drop rootstock
jaboticaba rootstock
butterscotch sapodilla

That's all I can think of, but I'll update this throughout the year.
I'm open to trading or buying. Also, I may just snatch them up in FL when I'm there hopefully next summer cause shipping is annoying sometimes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Disfigured new growth on garcinias
« on: December 21, 2022, 01:47:09 PM »
In talking about soil mixes I didn’t see that anyone mentioned clay.  Most garcinias occur naturally in soils that are primarily clay.  Peat, perlite, etc.  where’s the clay?
Peter
Clay soil in pots isn’t the best in the long term for zone pushers, but the g.brasiliensis I have in ground loves the clay here.

Garcinias can take acid pretty well. The mix I normally use is largely peat, some perlite, topsoil, and some sand and maybe compost. I think the soil is ok. you could always try to redo it, but I'd just hit with some fertilizer and wait till spring. No need to stress out the plant now.

New pictures of my madruno. Both have pushed growth twice and the disfigured one continues to do so, I think it might be calcium deficiency.

The soil you are using looks kinda decent but not good. That could be a reason of nutrient deficiency.
Use a good quality soil mix.

I got you with the basjoo.
Just a warning: the fruit is not edible!
It's winter now so I'm not sure how its gonna work out. I can try to dig up a corm and send it to you. Or we can wait until spring then I'll dig up a pup and send it to you.
Either way they should both do ok. I'd wait until 2023 though as its gonna get extremely cold and shipping is so slow now.

1009
Are they near ripe? Then I would go ahead and get them.
Better to have some than none.
22 is gonna be hard to protect fruits unless you use something to boost temps.

The annona and other could be dried I think? Not the garcinia though.

1011
well they offer etsy protection so from a monetary standpoint you have no risk, worst case scenario you open a ticket and get a full refund

but yeah I agree their website looks dumb for their target audience, they're trying to market it toward instagram and coming off as very cringey. They're playing into average people reading it and being like 'woah we can only get this fruit here' when really you can only get that variety for sure
I agree. There are better ways to get this plant.

1012
Seems like they are legit
I don’t understand why they aren’t posting pictures of the plants for sale on Etsy.
Something tells me they must be hiding something?
How can you patent a fruit that’s been in cultivation for thousands of years? Do they have a better strain?

Maybe this is where the fruit came from…not necessarily a varietal name?

Glad that worked for you. There has been many other seeds with that hard seed coat I tried to take off but ended up smashing them in the process.
One of the coupeia edulis seeds I tried to crack but ended up killing it. At least you can eat the seed...call me crazy, but I tried it and it was pretty good.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for calyptranthes species
« on: December 15, 2022, 09:54:08 PM »
Anyone got some? Farwell fruit farm had some for sale that died for me.
It's such a beauftiful plant species
I say some calyptranthes millspaughii in Mexico and was amazed. Unfortunately I didn't find seeds or have a permit at that time

This is the trick to speed up germination rates too.
Cinnamon apple took a year for me but 2 weeks for someone else after they removed the seed coat.

Those are beautiful trees. Whoever gets those is in for a treat!

Lara Farms has it right now. Wish I could get some to CA.

Thanks. I just don’t want to commit $50 in the end to try these lol.
If anyone has a few that’d be more ideal.
Worst case I’ll order some from them.

I've never tasted this fruit and am wondering if anyone would like to send a couple up here for me to try. I can trade or buy.
Thanks so much!

Hi! I am no expert but I am eating lunch right now with someone who is:) the “best” time is from late nov to late January. There is fruit year round but most of the ones you are looking for fruit at the start of the rainy season. Opposite seasons of the northern hemisphere. I have a cool calendar and book  I can take a picture of with all fruits that happen during any given month. June July august is cold dry winter and the worse of the months for fruit.  :o
Start in Brasilia and work your way to Alto Paraiso.

Jabo45 unfortunately you don’t really want to try klotzchiana. I have a bunch of seeds that I never put on website because it was so bitter. I thought about selling as ornamental but then my Brasilian friends tried to make juice from in and had some ummm
 “Issues” from both ends.  :o
Thanks for the information! Looks like winter is the only time that is worth the travel.
I read Farwell Fruit Farm's taste description on klotschiana and James said he liked it a lot and gave it a solid 8/10.
Maybe there's some missing factors?
