Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Avocado graft pics
« on: March 09, 2022, 04:54:14 PM »
That is very encouraging Brad. Our weather has been unusually variable week to week for the past 2 months including a couple of Santa Ana events. If they are good now future grafts should be a pretty sure thing.

Very nice selection of quality annona scions. Completed 15 grafts this morning. Thank you so much Mark.

Capulin cherry was readily available in the past. Never tasted one good enough to want to plant it either. They are fast growing nice looking trees though. Arenít there regular deciduous cherries you could plant?

This sounds like more trouble than it is worth. It will take multiple hours of difficult labor. Even if you are successful it will be a couple of years before it can recover and produce again. You could take scions from the tree and graft them to vigorous seedlings. After 2 years in ground they may be ahead of the transplant.

Omicron is now he dominant variant but delta is still around. It can take months for smell and taste to return.

Wow Kevin,

Those are just beautiful Shangri La scions. I will have plenty for my needs and enough leftover wood to smoke a Brisket. Thanks so much.

This tasting was the first I have attended. It was great getting to taste a few new to me cherimoya varieties and other interesting fruits. Above all it was wonderful to meet other fruit growers and put faces with some of the familiar names on this forum. Thanks so much for hosting Brad!

Hey Brad. Tell your son that at least one guy loved his brilliant videography skills.

IMHO guavas are great but relatively easy to grow. Many of us love them, however it is not a glamour fruit like cherimoya, lychee, dragonfruit or avocados. A mature tree or two produces more than enough fruit for an entire family. So for some they have lost their prime spot in our gardens.

I am not very knowledgeable on guava varieties bot rest assured there are others that have a depth of knowledge so stay positive and likely one of them will comment.

Steve at exotica could probably tell you.

Hi everyone,

I just got the fig bug this summer. I have 6 varieties in the ground in Bonsall, north San Diego county. Only second year but both the VdB and Panache have been and still are excellent and very productive. Way better than any store purchased figs. Already have picked up several others to plant early next spring and plan on getting many others including a couple from the black Madeira group. Just did a float test and it looks like I have the wasp. Woohoo. Already have the unk pastiliere to plant. Have any of you planted Male Capris to ensure fog wasps in your gardens?

You might try Encanto. I got mine there last year.

Losing the ducks is a bummer. If you need an incubator for the eggs I have a couple you can borrow.

Darn. Knew it was too good to be true having such good fortune with Ilama. It is definitely a grafted selection so I will change the name to ?? Atemoya for now.

It does look similar to atemoya but the segments appear more distinct. This would be my first ilama so I have nothing to compare this fruit to for the flower morphology fruit or leaves. Only pictures.

Then it could be a lot of things. Sorry I can not be more helpful. If you want to be sure JF seeds are easy to start.

Yes. It probably is. I have seen a lot of variability in Jak seedlings. If that came up in a pot you put a JF seed you can be pretty sure. Also JF seeds are huge and distinctive so you would not confuse it with most other seeds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / green Ilama in Southern California.
« on: August 19, 2021, 02:53:22 PM »
I put an un-named but grafted green ilama in the ground 2 years ago. To my surprise it has set 4 fruits and is doing very well. It overwintered as well as my cherimoyas and atemoyas. I cannot find information on when to harvest other than waiting for them to crack and all of those were red or pink fruit. Does anyone have any information on what to expect in Southern California?

I have a couple of small seedlings I could part with in North San Diego county. No shipping.
