I have had one for 3 years and as Peter said, the are not as heavy as passiflora, but they have numerous branches that grow quite long and entwine around each other, so the entire plant on a too small trellis might be a messy.  My trellis was too small so it grew up a wooden post and since the don't adhere to anything it would fall over and needed to be tied up for support.  It's pretty and flowers continually until it cools down.  However, I never figured out how to propagate it, I could never find seeds.  Its in its 3rd year and I cut it back after it died back in the winter.  It is putting out new growth.  Now you know what I know :)

Thank you I will do that.
Strangely, none  of the canistel,  sapodilla, or other fruit trees in the same proximatey are showing the same symtoms.
Orkine, are you seeing any more leaf drop?

Peter, I cleared out debris under the trees to see if there was an unusual amount of leaf drop.  Noticed some.  These two trees are side by side, but another tree further away is starting to drop leaves too.  My concern is that I'm not seeing a lot of new growth.  Is it possible this is damage from Ian that is just showing up now?  Could insects cause this type off damage?

Both garcinias are losing leaves.  At first I thought it was wind damage from Ian, but the damage is spreading.  It looks chewed but we are completely fenced.  These two trees are each 7 feet tall and wide.   Here are some pics.

Re Cedar Bay Cherry,  it looks like I bought my plant from a vendor on ebay who is not selling anymore(:  I am saving seeds and hope they produce fruit as good as the mother plant.  I have flowers from the ones from Logees but they still haven't fruited, so I don't know how different they will be.
Also, thanks for the heads up regarding no chill blueberries, I ordered a couple of "biloxi" and will see how they work out.

Is it small enough to try using some type of insect barrier netting next year to test for the effect of cross pollination?

Chewing sugarcane varieties are pretty fast growers.  The downfall for me is that their leaves are sharp (think sawgrass, brromeliads) and they are messy looking.  I did like the look of Pele's smoke because the leaves as well as the stalk are purple, but you still need to occasionally clean it out.
Simpson stopper is a Florida native and I love the scent when I  brush against the leaves.  Nothing really bothers it and it fills in nicely.  The fruits are ok.

Sorry, I couldn't find the tag for that one.  Some others I got from Logees and  are  just starting to bloom, so I will be able to compare and see if they are the same quality.  I will let you know.  I'm really hoping they are all that good.

A new one for me is Eugenia reinwardtiana (Cedar bay cherry). This is my first year fruiting this one and I have been very surprised at the quality.  For me, so many of the "tropical cherries", although good as tropical fruit, take a lot of imagination to think of them as well,  cherries.  Not this one, it actually taste very similar to store bought cherries.  It even as a pit like a cherry.  Flesh to pit ratio is good (unlike say a peanut butter fruit --apologies to all fans of this fruit).  And the flavor is very 'cherry like'.  To be sure, I gave one to my husband to try (he is a wonderful albeit brutally honest individual).  His response, "its a cherry".  So there you have it!!
Oh and it grows very happily potted and once it starts to fruit it seems to fruit continuously.

Thanks, I wonder if cross polination would improve the quality or just productivity.  Regardless,  I bought another to see :).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Imbe
« on: August 22, 2022, 07:52:39 AM »
This is a picture of my Imbe with what appears to be small fruit,  since this garcinia is normally dioecious and I only have one,  would this be an example of a hermaphrodite and will these small fruit hold, or is this normal for Imbe.
This is the first flowering (that I noticed).

Thanks Peter, so maybe not as drought tollerant as I thought.  The description of the fruit is that it was reminiscent of sugarcane.

Have seedling Velvet tamarind (Dialium guineense), African locust bean (Parkia biglobosa) and Guajjilote (Parmentiera edulis) and was hoping some of you are growing them and can offer some guidance, tips  on cultivation since there is so little out there.

Here are some things I have noticed;
African Locust Bean---
---fast germination
----seeds germinated at the same time
----fast growing,
----growth slows if not potted up
----happy in my mix of potting soil, perlite and sand
----grows faster in full sun but can take partial shade

Velvet Tamarind
----Staggered germination, still germinating after 3 months
----difference in growth among seedlings, but more on the moderate/slow side
----resents repotting, at least from the seedling trays, have learned to grow them in deeper community pot then seedling trays so they can develop more before repotting which seemed to work better for me.
----resented moving from seedling mix to my regular potting mix (leaves yellowed) so I moved them to a higher peat mixture and they greened up -- so thinking they are acid lovers?
----seem to grow better as seedlings under partial shade
----only two out of 20 have branched

Guahilote
---100% germination
----nothing seems to bother these
----likes full sun
----likes my potting mix so not paraticular about ph?
----moderate and bushy growth

These are my fun seeds, not looking or expecting anything, although always wondering why I planted so many :)

Ok, so that's all I know and if any of you can fill in any blanks, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks for the review!  Taking that one off my list :)

Thank you for expanding my knowledge of mullberries, I wasn't aware so many varieties existed!  Do you have them organized by taste (sweet, acid, balanced ) and by size of fruit?

Here's a picture of the tree.  It is a seedling without a label.
