i'm exploring a fast and easy way to shade or protect my trees from high winds.  The main tree I want to protect is my sweetheart lychee it's about 7ft tall now and just as wide.  I always lose a branch or two in high winds but nothing to bad this past year.  The last scrotcher toasted 40% of it's leaves thankfully no damage to the branches.   The best solution so for is those instant screenhouse but the height of those are only 7 and half feet tall.

https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Instant-Screenhouse-10-Feet/dp/B00339C3G4/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1533223513&sr=1-5&keywords=coleman+screenhouse&dpID=41757o0VRNL&preST=_SX300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

something like this.....but I will have to add 2 to 3 feet to the poles to increase the height....replace the roof with shad cloth

anybody have another better idea?

Hi All,

So my sir prize graft took :) it's been about 2weeks since  it flushed from bottom right node of the scion.  My question is should I prune the top part of the scion where i marked it? the growth came out pretty nice and straight so thinking about keeping that as the tree. I was concern that there is alot of energy stored at the tip of the scion and if I cut it.  it might kill the graft?  I'm i just over thinking this? not just this but for other grafts as well do you prune part of scion to shape your trees.....or should I  wait awhile before doing that?

56
Assuming general health of the tree is good what else do you look at?  For any other type of fruit tree I would look at trunk size over form of the tree.  But it seems to me for lychee form of tree is a lot harder to correct.  You cant prune too heavily in fear they might not bounce back and new growth seems to grow pretty erratic and unpredictable.  So I find myself looking  for a tree that is straight and looks like a tree vs. a branch that is heavy on one side.  Am I doing this wrong?  if so how do you correct the form of lychee trees?

so my lemon tree finally died....when we moved in it was already in bad shape.  I tried to save it but it finally croaked.  So mango or cherimoya?  I already have two mango trees in ground but wouldn't mind another.  No cherimoya in ground yet but I have lots of room for container trees and only one spot in ground.  And I feel cherimoya fruits better in pot vs. mangos.  Does being in a container effect the quality of fruit for cherimoya?  I  don't mind a couple fruit a tree but is the quality of the fruit is the same? What's your thought?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / fruit/tree royalities question?
« on: September 03, 2017, 08:23:24 PM »
how does it work? when are you suppose to pay royalities? when you sell and use the name of the trademark/patent fruit or sell the trees?

for example if I sell a sweetheart lychees airlayered tree and use the name do I have to pay royalties? how about when I sell sweetheart fruits  by it's name.  Of course this is for commercial retail and just not from my backyard haha just wishful thinking just want to know the legalities if one of these day it happens :)

like always thanks ahead of time... I tried googling and search for info on this forum but couldn't find anything

69
googled it and they say either wait until they split or hit it for metallic sound.  big and small sounds all the same???

Tropical Fruit Discussion / calcium sulfate and agricultural sulfur
« on: August 16, 2017, 12:39:14 PM »
my understanding is that calcium sulfate has neutral ph where as sulfur would lower it.  if I'm already using calcium sulfate can I still use sulfur to lower my ph? I just afraid of sulfur overdose.  if I can appply at same time or wait a couple weeks apart?

72
1ST time planting seedlings and had pretty good results.  They started sprouting about 2weeks ago.  They were in full shade.  I just moved it to partial shade.  How long do I keep them there and when should I move them to full sun?  Also I planted them in half gallon milk cartons when should I up pot and what size pot next?  1 gallon or 3?

73
