Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hoop house
« on: November 21, 2017, 04:36:53 PM »
Anyone made one of these?  I am making one and have a few questions for those with experience using 6mil UV poly on a greenhouse type structure.  Specifically I am trying to determine the best method of attaching the poly to the end rails and also trying to decide if the galvanized hoops need to be painted white to reduce heat?  Also do the perlin clamps need something on them to keep the poly from rubbing on them or just go ahead and lay it right on top of the hoops and perlin clamps?

« on: September 26, 2017, 04:47:06 PM »
Is anyone growing these inland or in the desert?  Been waiting to put them in the ground but worried they will not be able to take full sun.  The surinam cherry seems ok in fjll sun here, I have a grumichama, putomba and rio grand cherry that need to be planted.  How much dry heat can they take?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Holy Hell Santa Annas
« on: September 03, 2017, 01:37:51 PM »
Was a real scorcher here yesterday.  111F, 22% humidity and blowing hard winds.  The weather put a real smackdown on my avocado and other fruit trees.  I have been watering daily and they havent dropped any fruit!  Seems watering extra heavy in these conditions is crucial. To top it off our air conditioner went out right at the peak of the heat yesterday.  Now we are just roasting hoping summer will end soon.

Photo is a newly planted jacaranda tree with a avocado tree down below getting blasted by a desert wind.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Grow lights LED
« on: July 28, 2017, 04:38:51 PM »
I have a 130W actual wattage and 260 actual wattage grow lamps for sale.  They are the equivalent of 300 and 600 watt HID lamps.

They are VIPARSPECTRA reflector series 300 and 600 models.

75$, and 150$, free shipping.

They were only used for a few months over winter and I am not going to be able to use them again next winter with a new baby on the way. These are super bright and will work wonders on your cold tender plants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora spacing
« on: July 25, 2017, 03:18:45 PM »
Ive got 100ft of 6ft tall fence I am going to put passion fruit on.  I picked up a few different ones at the nursery and the spacing recommendation is different on each one ranging from 6ft to 15ft spacing.

What do you guys think?  Depends on the variety or they pretty much all get the same size?  Am I going to regret planting these things for any reason?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / San Diego Neighbors garden
« on: July 05, 2017, 06:59:34 PM »
Snapped a few photos of my neighors trees when I was at their bbq for the 4th.  They have a cool electric fence to keep animals out.  They have a bunch of stone fruits, citrus, avocado, mangos, longan, bunch of stuff.  Their trees were planted too closely so its kind of a jungle.  But fun to hike around in.

I have a couple other neighbors with nice gardens, I will try and get over to theirs and take a few photos.  One lady has some amazing bananas and coffee going inside a guava patch.

Guava I think

Persimon and asian pear maybe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / San Diego garden photos
« on: July 03, 2017, 05:34:25 PM »
Took a bunch of photos of the garden today.  I have some jackrabbits eating trees and some persea mites but otherwise things are looking nice.  Plants are loving the heat.

Just put in some dragon fruits.  I got 8 or 9 different types in 5 2x2ft boxes.  Trying redwood 4x4s and also 8ft tall T post.

watermelons

fuji apples

I had 4 banana trees but the rabbits took out the smallest one down to the ground.  Pesky rabbits.  I'm in the process of wrapping chicken wire around the bottom of the 750ft of plastic deer fence that the rabbits can chew through.

Mandarin orange tree doing a big flush and 2nd bloom.

mexican guavas

mandavillas and plumeria

desert rose

florida grafted mangos planted over winter

Avocados fruit set, lamb hass, sir prize, hass, reed

Avocado trees, I've been pruning these heavily to keep them 6 to 8 ft tall.  Now I am going to let them grow until spring and get a bit larger.  They have a nice balanced shape I like now.  The trees are all around 2 years or less.

fuerte

reed

hass and stewart trees

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Haircut time?
« on: June 19, 2017, 08:35:34 PM »
Should I give my stonefruit trees a haircut now?  All of the fruits are harvested.  Or is it better to wait till fall?  If I trim now maybe they will do a second flush?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado pits stuck? Fruits falling
« on: March 21, 2017, 11:26:57 AM »
I have a 2 year old hass tree that had a half dozen or so fruits on it.  Wasnt planning to start picking them for another couple months but they have started falling off the tree.  The do ripen and taste great but they all have a pit that sticks to the flesh.  They are not splitting and coming in half easily.  There is a hard part still in the flesh connected to the pit.

2 questions.  Is the tree dropping fruit because it is just immature?  I suspect that is the case.  We had a heatwave here also and the old leaves are shedding and the trees are blooming.

The second question is whats going on with the seeds and the bad flesh sticking to the pit?  Hopefully this goes away when yhe fruits hang longer or I will probably end up taking the tree out or regrafting it.
