Anyone have any quality cherimoya fruit for sale?
« on: March 02, 2017, 07:55:47 AM »
Not willing to pay $8.00 a piece for cherimoya.  I'm not a cheapscape but won't allow myself to be ripped off.   Want to try something other than the crap you get, if you're lucky, from a local grocery store here in Texas.  Have checked mail order stores and they're not only expensive but I have no clue as to their credibility, where the fruits come from (Chile or SoCal) and the quality of the fruits.

Any ideas or links?

Thanks,
Mark

I don't have an answer, but I would also very much like to know the answer.

Goodland organics in San Luis is on hold for fruit right now but might be coming into harvest soon. Worth checking out, not sure on price though.

$8/lb including shipping isn't a bad price for good quality cherimoya for those of us who don't live in cherimoya land.

Would you pay $8 for a steak? Good fruit is expensive. Crappy imported Cherimoya is $6 pound plus in California , $7-$8 is normal in the local area they are produced here without shipping,so I realize the zone pushers are dreamers but good luck. How many commercial acres of Cherimoya grown in CA ?

Cherimoya is kind of pricey even in SoCal. The last time I took a picture of large ones at a supermarket they were $7.49/lb
Farmers market fruits are $2.50 for small fruits up to around $8/lb for large ones.

The easiest way to get good cherimoya fruit here is to grow it yourself. I haven't worked out how much the water and fertilizers cost for me.

There you go Mark, you can order some from JF when his fruits are in season.

I think it's so expensive because of the hand pollination and the soft bruise-able skin. I mean, it grows in the same range as Hass avocados but avocados are relatively cheap.

But those are atemoyas, not cherimoyas.  Huge difference...

Wish I had known!  I've seen some prices as high as $21/lb. mail order.  Will buy the crappy ones locally for rootstock, if available that is.

Got it, thanks!  What's with the Caviar Limes (a.k.a. Finger Limes) they're selling?  Novelty or really worth the price?

There are huge difference base on individual preferences. people shouldn't be disparaging atemoyas . they are both great fruits in their own rights don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Rob and I prefer cherimoyas and I would venture to say that we are in the minority.......

I think bsbullie would place a higher value on cherimoya since it's harder to grow where he is. Here, I think they're about the same but the Vietnamese population seems to prefer atemoya and would actually pay more. I like cherimoya more too. The flavor is stronger.

I can send you some from the farmers market.  They were 4$ a lb I thing.  Taste was good but a bit seedy the last few weeks.

Mark, I saw tons of cherimoya in Little Saigon last week if you want me to check on fruits for you? The fruits looked good and I could mail some to you if you desire. Chris

Actually I saw them for cheap at the farmers market today. Must be in season because huge ones were $2.50 or so. They were pretty ripe and the sign said ripe. Green large ones were $4.50.

Thanks for the kind offers folks!  I have 3-6 large Dr. White and Booth coming next week, shipped for $40. They have a good rep.   Apparently the quality is tops.  They pick and ship the same day.  http://goodlandorganics.com/store

If the choice of rootstock critical for cherimoya regarding attributes it imparts to the scion such as nutrient uptake, vigor, root rot disease resistance?
