Very nice! Will you keep it in a pot or put it in ground?

Treesnmore,

You have amazing Eugenia/Myrciaria water!

Your plant looks like it came straight from the soils of Brazil!

These seedlings hate, and I mean HATE city water (also high ph, wind, intense light when young, and temps lower than 27F  ? )

When u got this one from me, it looked much worse (sad to say for me  :'( )  but my city water was to blame.

You should have a tree that grows faster and fruits sooner, than someone who's using city water like me.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Great looking plant Mike! I have found this to be one of the toughest jaboticabas to grow on its own roots! I agree with Adams comments! My seedlings look terrible without regular rainwater and iron! The grafted ones seem to tolerant any type of water without any issues!

Hey,

I'm thinking of taking advantage of all of this election hype,

I'm going to make only 2 trees, that are limited edition 2012 Obomneyticabas

They will be cocktail trees, consisting of M. aureana, and M. jaboticaba (Sabara).

We had the chance to line up large leaf, regular and white jaboticabas last night. The big leaf beat the regular as the fruits were large, often seedles or single seeded and were nice and sweet. The regular ones were small, seedy and not sweet enough (probably too little rain/water, but below their normal standard). The White Jabs kicked both of their asses though. People were hesitant to eat the green skinned jabs, but once they popped them in their mouths they simultaneously shouted 'wow!'. If you dont have a white jab tree, get one!

BMc,

how the heck do they have a fruiting one of these in Australia!! ??

I wonder who has it, and how many more there are?

I've never tasted one, so I'm very excited to try one.

Was the aroma of the skin, (or flavor of the tannin in the skin) altogether different than that of the more common types (sabara)?

Thanks for sharing!

As far as I know there are 3 larger trees. The one in the pot fruits, the others grow. You'll be excited to hear that pot culture really seems to speed up the production in this tree. There are a bunch of seedlings from this tree. I'm sure there are others in old-school collections, but these are mainly 'forgotten' or 'locked-gate' kinda collections in older collector's hands who brought 7/8ths of everything in in the 80s but are now disinterested or out of the matrix. You'd be surprised at what we have here. I'm constantly shocked by what turns up in the backyard of collectors who dont make a fuss about having a superb collection.

I'll take some happy snaps tonight and report back. I'll cheack again, but the skin doesnt seem to have any real tannin and is quite edible/unobtrusive to the eating experience. One seed, not particularly clingy, plenty of flesh.

Was just looking at my close to 3 meters aureana today , still no sign it will flower soon , it just grows and grows , taller than my regular jabs that have been fruiting for several years now .
I will take a pic in the next days , but I don't think it is missing anything ...

Should have fruited long time ago. May be some nutrient deficiency. Try giving them high potassium fertlizer. BTW wood ashes has lots of potassium, just in case you cant get the right fert over there.

I'll do that Oscar , the strange thing is that a ' precoce ' planted 2 meters away fruits very well .

Potassium sulphate rather than potassium chloride will be good for the jab.KCL will burn the ends of the leaves.Wood ash, mulch, espsom salts and dolomite all contain elements that can promote flowering. The back of an axe can also provide encouragement if the fertilizer route comes up empty.

Luc,

Your tree is just a late bloomer, and you are at the end of a long wait.

it will bloom this year most likely, without any special treatment.

Even only 2 meters distance can make a change in soil in some rare circumstances. More likely your white jabo is a slow starter. Supposedly precoce (hybrid) and white jabo take about same length of time to start fruiting.

I have two fruiting jaboticabas from seeds traded with Helton Josué, in Brazil.
At the time, he said they were white jaboticaba.
After a painful start due to alkaline conditions, one of them fruited and
produced dark fruits, with a red tint when immature. I assumed one of us
made a mistake and they were not white jaboticaba.

The second one, fruited for the first time this past summer. Just a couple of fruits.
Surprisingly, the fruits were a bit larger and fully green when ripe.

I am not sure what is going on. The plants look the same to me,
yet the fruits are very different.

Maybe the seeds are hybrid and one reverted more to its white jaboticaba parent...
I am hoping next fruiting will provide more clues...

here are the pics of the white jaboticabas i promised to post a few weeks back. the earlier ones were larger, sweeter and single seeded - better than any other jab ive had. The later ones were smaller with a bit tougher skin and often double seeded with more tart taste. As they are green when ripe its probably a bit hard to tell when they are ripe. these were from a very generous fellow fruit grower quite near me.

Don't know if this will help you or confuse matters even further, but there are at least 2 species called white jaboticaba. The most common one is M. aureana. I forget right now the other species and don't have access to my books.
