Sunsapote (Licania platypus)
« on: August 25, 2019, 10:53:07 AM »
Does anyone else grow Licania platypus? It is a very attractive tree, especially new growth. I haven't try the fruit yet. May be someone can share sunsapote fruit taste description?

We grow it.  The fruit has a very large seed with perhaps an inch of pulp full of fiber around the seed.  The pulp is very aromatic, sweet, and pleasing.  We cut the easily broken skin away and then slice sections off the seed to eat.  Iíve seen people chew the fruit off the seed but I donít want to battle the fiber that way.  Itís good.

I have one tree fruiting ,guess in 1 month I can harvest, there are different qualities.
one neighbor nearby has some trees but they are almost uneadeble.
The one I got is from Veracruz ,like a sweet potato in taste and size but sweeter and creamy
 and not much fiber.

I have 3 in the ground not fruiting yet , the seeds also are from the Vera Cruz area so I am crossing my fingers they will turn out like the one Helmut ( Waldi1 ) has . Those I tasted in Honduras were like Peter described so I decided not to collect the seeds from these . The trees are enormous .

Something good to know is that the fruit drops on its own when ready.  Itís very popular with animals that forage under our fruit trees.  Itís going to take a while to come into production.  I wouldnít bother to prune it, just give plenty of space.

Thank you all. Will have to wait until my tree bears to see if I got lucky with good tasting fruits.
Btw, I have one extra Sunsapote in container, little over 6 feet tall. PM me if interested. Local FL pick up only.

Pick up will not be possible. Are there going to be any seeds for sale in the future ?

People should be aware that it is not in the Sapotaceae family but rather Chrysobalanaceae, though the flavor is typical of the former. I believe the binomial Moquilea platypus now has priority again.

Fantastic, alien looking flowers, but regrettably small.

Some of the Spanish common names are funny: Zapote borracho (Drunk sapote), Caca de niŮo (Poop of a boy).
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers or Fernando Malpartida
