these actually grow really easy here but Im super excited for them. My kids love them and the trees are LOADED this year! they are royal lee and munnie royal and royal crimson. All 3 are fruiting here very heavy fruitset. if you live in southern ca, these are awesome trees.

That looks awesome, Brad. I wanted to espalier a Royal Crimson along a concrete wall we have but was too concerned about the heat. But, of they are flourishing there, I'm sure they can handle the heat here!

Cherries like the heat. Yeah they need some cold to trigger flowering but they grow great during summer when its hot. They grow them in the central valley near Fresno where is crazy hot. The cherry harvest will be done here in a few weeks then these things will put on 4-5ft of growth. Its probably the most vigorous trees I have so plant with caution they want to get giant.

They grow well, less chill requirement than most of the pluots and apricots. Next winter I'm going to try and source a few cherry rootstocks and grow more they are so good, can't have too many cherries.

Yep, can't get a standard rootstock here! I've been looking at the dawrf/semi-dwarf rootstocks that may grow slowly enough for me to train at a manageable level.

Looks really nice, Brad.

They grow well here in Bakersfield as well, I have to fight off the birds and squirrels. It's a constant struggle.

Question for you stone fruit experts: I’ve Got two cherry rootstocks growing out of one 15g pot, both rootstocks have Royal Lee and Minnie Lee grafted onto them. Is it better to separate them now or when they go dormant?

have some trees a little further inland, maybe 10 or 20 miles south of Irvine, and they are very reluctant to fruit.
The Royal Lee have not fruited yet, even after 5 years. One of the Royal Minnie is grafted onto the top of a Bing cherry and the tree has reached a medium big size. This year I got one single cherry fruit on it, which looks like it will ripen. This is the first fruit so far that hasn't dropped. I also got a small bunch of maybe 7 cherries on another Royal Minnie tree in a container that is in mostly shade. It's base rootstock was overgrown and the suckers needed to be cut off, and the top grafted part of the cherry did not look so good; it might have only sent out fruit because it was under severe stress and dying. The cherry fruits were small and looked like not a lot of vigor went into creating them, like they began overripening before the cherries had fully matured, although the flavor was just okay.
Maybe when the trees get bigger and a colder winter than usual comes along there will be more luck.

The area is in solid zone 10 (on the border between 10a/10b).

The Royal Lee trees seems to be growing just between okay and good.

my house is 16 miles inland 1150ft elevation in the hot part of san diego county. Cherries are not a problem here. Another mwmber on this forum I know lives nearby in Poway also had tons of cherries on his minnie royal, royal lee.

Monday we hit 108. All the cherries in our area have responded in kind and I swear they grew a foot overnight.

I grafted some cherries I got from you on my pluot and my 4 in 1 cherry last year and they are producing like mad already, thought they have a tendency to create 'double' cherries.

Yes I do sell lots of low chil stone fruit I have all the good ones. It's best to do the grafting in January or February. If you ask me at that time I will have them.

I noticed a lot of my stuff is blooming well this year. Things that normally dont bloom real heavy. The cherry are doing a super bloom.

Royal Lee and Coral Champagne both are flowering at the same time.
They are in the same group so they can’t cross pollinate each other.

Royal Crimson can provide pollens to both.
Tree is small so no flowers.
No cherries this year.

Anyone in SoCal have high chill hour cherry flowering?

i got 6 maxima 14 rootstocks from burnt ridge nursery. They were around 7$ each. Showed up today, big gauge, 5ft long. Great buy if anyone needs rootstocks, their stuff is primo.

Cherries really set a ton of fruit now. Its every single flower set. The 3 different trees overlapped flowering time pretty good too. Ive got a lot of trees but these are some of the most prized by everyone here.

Brad, your cherry trees look great. How old are your trees? Do you know which rootstock they are on? I have cherry trees on mazzard, maxma 14, and gisela, and I think the one at home is on colt. Trees were planted a year ago and a few more last month, so can’t tell a difference in their growth yet. I got Mazzard and Mahaleb rootstocks from Burnt Ridge last year. Also got several nemaguard from them.

Looking forward to having an awesome harvest like you one day!

Im pretty sure they are on maxima 14. I have the tags that say in the garage, will check on it. Trees are maybe 5 years old. Not sure exactly, they grow super fast. Im pretty sure there was no fruit for 3 years then year 4 was a good crop and this year looks to be super bumper crop. The smaller tree in the middle is a couple years younger. The 2 outside ones are minnie royal and royal lee and the middle is royal crimson.

The hard part is keeping the birds off of them.

I also got 6 more mazzard stocks in the mail a few weeks ago that I still need to pick spots for. Was considering right in front of my house so i can camp out there with a shotgun when its harvest time.

The Maxma sounds promising. Near the house sounds good. Hope you get such an abundance that the birds don’t make a dent. I’m thinking about planting extra mulberries on the edge of our property for the birds, so they leave my cherries and figs alone. Not sure if that’ll just attract more birds. I’m trialing several other cherries, will share with you any that do well for us.

It’s 40 year old Navel orange.
Most years it’s too tart for me.
Some years it’s good.

We make OJ from it.

I’m surprise to see a few Royal Lee fruits.
I thought RL and Coral Champagne can not pollinate each other.

Where did you get the corral champaigne tree? Is there a place that sells scionwood? I planted 6 mazzard rootstocks and will top work them in January 2023. Will need to decide what types to graft.

Ive got an 1/8th acre fenced off and a chicken coop in the middle of it. We planted 8 mulberry trees, 6 pom plants, 6 cherries, and a couple fig trees in it. Theres still room for more stuff in that area. Its the fertilizer factory for the rest of the groves. Its not near the house though, birds are going to be eating a lot of mulberry and cherry in a few years.

I put some tropical shade tree in front of our house a few years ago. Grew it from seed. Its called Peltophorum pterocarpum. It has yellow flowers and is already flowering. Its kind of unique for california. But i wasnt overly attached to it. Was going to rip it out and put the cherries there but my son wanted to keep it so we left it alone.

I bought Coral Champagne from Costco last year.
It was huge for $40.
I bought it to graft flowering cherry.
I’ve decided to keep it for fruit.

A friend told me today that Costco have cherry tree now.
I haven’t been to Costco so you need to stop by to check.

If you still want scion in winter I can send you for postage.

According to picture above, Royal Lee and Coral Champagne can NOT pollinate each other.
I set both trees side by side.
Both trees are holding fruits.

Either my trees are mislabeled or bees are bringing pollens from somewhere.

your trees probably just self pollinated or they are cross pollinating. i doubt they would be mislabeled. they are likely self pollinating but do better with a 2nd tree around.

I’m in Orange County.
The closest weather station to me is in Irvine.
Not many chill hours.

The label on my tree is Coral Champagne.
Info on it says it’s self sterile.
My 2 adjacent neighbors don’t have cherry trees.
My smaller Royal Lee has few flowers.
Its pollen is not compatible to CC.
Yet both trees are holding fruits.
CC is holding a lot of fruits.
Some are in clusters.
I’m scratching my head on this.

I’m keeping all my cherry trees in pots, to keep their roots cold in winter.
It’s just a hunch.
I need to read some more.

For what it is worth I see some fruit set on both my Governer wood, and Kansas sweet cherries in Bonsall Ca this year. They are still flowering. Also have Stella near by but it has not broken bud yet. Minnie Royal, and Royal Lee will be going in the ground in a few weeks after they have filled the pots they were purchased in with roots. Fingers crossed for a nice harvest in a couple of years.

You all in San Diego are fortunate the cherry blooms have finished. My Stella just opened up a couple of days ago up here and today the wind is howling! Storms is coming in, nice to finally get some rain but it would have been better a month ago.

The Royal Crimson I bought this year is too small but just budded out too, the 80'F+ last week probably helped but brrr this weekend.

Its easy, all the stone fruit stuff is super easy. I did a bunch of sloppy grafts one year thinking many would fail and thry all took still.

Cherries are getting ripe now. We have been getting a big bowl everyday. Birds are busy eating the dwarf mulberries! Thry havent touched the peaches or cherries. And theres still tons of mulberries.

plant the thai dwarf just out of sight of the cherry tree. birds like those thai dwarfs. they are pooping it on my new concrete. But its still better than eating all the cherries.
