Oh man this thread has become BEEFY and I’m loving it.

Simon, It seems the PP does far better in California! That’s great atleast someone gets fruit!

Weiss, how far inland is your yard in Miami? Trying to decide if planting PP will
Work in my Miami yard. I’ve heard they do terrible as far as production down here but Im 2 miles inland from Bay, hopefully I can plant and get a few fruit but wow your yard makes it sound TOUGH.

Abe I’m about 5.5 miles from the bay. I have to add this. Yes a well ripened PP is pure gold and if a person can only fit a few trees in their yard from what my experience has been one might consider skipping it if production has been very low anywhere around. Like I said, I have 13 of them and only got 5 fruit. All 13 have been in ground at least 3 full years and are at least 8-10’ tall. I’m doing things differently the next 12 months and if my PP production stays this low next season I will top all my PP’s and convert them to either Orange Sherbet or Kathy. I’m already doing that with 2 of my 4 Coconut Cream trees. And if the 2 I’m leaving don’t perform in 2022 they’ll get converted too. But everyone has their own priorities and we all are mad scientists in our own ways!

I chose Sugarloaf.  I hope I made the right choice.  We'll have to wait until summer to make any new comparisons.

Well I ended up with both cultivars. My Pineapple Pleasure is still a baby but i decided to give it a shot. No blooms so far but only in ground less than a year.

My sugarloaf only bloomed partially this Year. Just A few panicles, but it’s holding one grape sized fruit and it’s about 8 ft tall.

Last year my sugarloaf bloomed better and held 5 fruit until they were about golf balls size and then dropped them all.

If it’s any consolation, my NDM Is in ground almost 5 years and yet to bloom so do not assume that it’s only performance mangoes that lack precocious ability.

In conclusion, I still have faith that no
One will build a better two mangos TO MY LIKING in the next decade and there for Sugarloaf AND pineapple pleasure trees will have a full decade to show me what there made of. (Please universe, don’t send me any hurricanes).

I will say that Cecilove and Juicy Peach wowd me last year and they were in competition foe that pineapple pleasure spot but she still won the spot.

My PP grafts onto mature rootstock are well into 3 years and still not a single flower. My 2 year old Sugarloaf grafts, on the other hand, put out copious amounts of flowers in the last month; unfortunately, 99% of the buds were male (I believe I read this is common in the first few years). I have a few pea-sized SL fruit among a sea of dead male flowers, holding out hope they get to maturity. If I don't see any flowers from PP again next year, they might be getting reworked.

Yes, PP certainly has mostly male flowers. 3 years in a row mostly all male and when I asked Alex of Tropical Acres i Believe he told me that yes they have mostly male flowers however the few female ones could be very successful. I will stick with both varieties for a while longer for sure and atleast analyze their traits in my yard over 10 years to give me an idea of what I can expect.

This tree was planted in 2015. It’s growth habit has been moderately vigorous and it’s been very productive for a while.

We have another one that was planted in 2014 which has grown as a dwarf. That tree produces more male flowers and hasn’t been as productive the last couple cycles, but has borne good crops in the past. Pineapple Pleasure produces such large fruit that it doesn’t need to make too many individual fruits for the yield to be in the acceptable range.

We have a topwork that started fruiting in year 2 (last year) and had a nice first crop, much lighter second crop this year due to a late vegetative growth flush that occurred but it’s flower ratio has been closer to the 2015 tree.

Sugarloaf is around 7 feet. Several fruit holding. Had a few fruit last year, but squirrels or rats got them.

I have 6 or so SL hanging on the grafted branches (slightly bigger than peas); with all the rain and wind I'm surprised I didn't lose any....yet.

My 7/8 foot tree is holding one grape size SL. Only had a partial bloom on lower branches.

I had a NDM in ground for around 8 years which never produced a single mango and only pushed 1-2 panicles. I replaced it with a SL.
