Limes turned pink grafted on pink lemon.
« on: July 04, 2021, 03:54:57 PM »
My Persian lime grafts on variegated pink lemon produce normal looking fully green limes with pink on the inside.  Is that possible?  I thought I was hallucinating then I cut more of them and they were all this way!  Then I went back to check that they were in fact off the grafted branches and they were!

I know rootstock influences flesh color to a degree, but this is the first time that I have heard of the flesh color being totally changed. The wonders of nature never cease.

It's a long shot but any chance it's some form of graft chimera that developed on your tree ?

I didn't take pictures a used all the limes but next time I will take pics.  It seems impossible to me but I went and rechecked and the limes definitely came off the grafted branches.

My guess is that the lime will revert back to normal if it is re-grafted to a non verigated rootstock. Maybe it has had the genes for pigmentation all along, but the rootstock is providing the trigger to activate the supressed gene. Genetics is far more complicated than we like to admit. If it is rootstock controlled, you could start grafting limes on the verigated lemon rootstock and selling them. I wonder what other citrus it would work with? Pomello, grapefruit, kumquat?

Before grafting did the twigs spend any time in the refrigerator, perhaps in the Crispr drawer.

Crispr is a tool used in genetic engineering.

Call me old fashioned but I don't have any use for GMO food.  Or viruses.

Better hope there is no ww3 because there will   be a lot of GMO viruses and bacteria that really love to feed on Homo Sapiens.

No GMO for me. We really have only scratched the surface of what there is to know about genetics. There is a lot of danger in pulling levers when we don't know everything they do. I am fine with using what we know of genetics to screen for desirable characteristics, but people shouldn't play god if they don't know what God knows.
