Cultivars of June plum and hog plum
« on: February 09, 2022, 08:14:00 AM »
Anyone aware of what varieties of June and hog plum are available? I’ve seen red and yellow mombin and typical yellow June plum, curious if there’s more out there

theres a tall and dwarf june plum.

from Fruits of warm climates. Julia F. Morton

"In Guatemala, the variety called jocote de corona, which is flattened and somewhat shouldered at the apex, is said to be of superior quality, and jocote tronador is nearly its equal."

Here is a June plum I bought at a local nursery just a few days ago.

Dont know much about them other than the way they are right now they taste like a green mango.

Crunchy and a bit tart sort of "turpentiney" (if that makes sense).

No bitter after taste .....I really like them.

I was surprised to see almost every plant they had there had fruit in this small pot size and decided to buy one.

These are seedling and the guy knew nothing of variety but I was super happy with the purchase.

To me it is like a green mango that I can take off the tree and eat like an apple.

From reading these is a big difference in taste in the ripe ones so I will let a few hang to see what those taste like.

I hear they grow well and give lots of fruit....if you like how green mango tastes i dont think you could go wrong.

I spent $25 on the one pictured

Best of luck

In the red mombins I know of two fruit shapes and sizes. One is about 3/4-1 inch but the other is significantly larger and has a protruding "nipple" on the base. This is the larger one.

I have not seen any june plum variety with big fruits in the USA.  In Asia, the fruits are of the size of avocado.
