WTB:"Green" Australian Mulberry grafted.
« on: June 16, 2022, 03:17:33 PM »
This is the one I am told tastes like Honeydew melon. I see others posting about Shahoot variety but not sure if they are the same thing of a different white variety.

Yes, there are at least 3 different names that are sold under, but I think they are the same plant. I have all three types and the fruits are the same, long, thin, yellow when ripe, super sweet tasting like a honey melon, with no grass flavor.

You should check in with Kevin Jones, he is grafting some of the white pakistan/australian green plants for sale.

If you can't find any in the next 2-3 months then contact me, I may have some small grafted plants ready to ship. I plant to graft a few for people that can't graft, or just want one that is already grafted and growing.

I have hardwood cuttings of several other varieties in the humid dome. So far the World's Best is taking off. And buds starting on e couple other varieties. I purchased cuttings of WB, Lakeland, Jan'ds Best, Black Pakistan, and Maui. Remains to be seen which are successful. Thanks, Ed

FYI, these mulberry varieties will not root, or at least I have not had any success with rooting them.
1. White Pakistan
2. Australian Green
3. King Shahtoot/Saaranpur local
[all above have the same size/taste fruits]
4. Red Himalayan
5. Persian (morus nigra)

Most of the other varieties should root from cuttings.

I got my cuttings from sc4001992, all the cuttings including the green was successfully grafted onto worlds best. The only cuttings that did not take was himalayan red, all 3 cuttings failed. I will try again in the future.

I think you should have no problem rooting the others you mention above. Also Tice will root from cutting.
World's Best/ Thai Dwarf is the easiest to root and grow, gets tons of fruits (not the sweetest taste).

So maybe get cuttings of the Green/White types and graft to my WB which seem so far the easiest to root?

Called Excalibur and another nurseryman in PB County with my list of wants. Every single item is sold out for the season. Guess people are now wanting to grow fruit (and veggies) more than ever?

Yes, that will work but make sure your rooted WB is growing for at least 6 months before trying to graft anyting. The roots still may not be strong so grafting to soon can kill your WB. Waiting 1 year for your rooted cuttings is best.

Here's some photos of the shangri la / black pakistan (?) I rooted a few years ago with photos for your info.

Pau, that's great news to hear your grafts did well.

If you want to try grafting the Red Himalayan, do it this month before it gets to hot, otherwise wait until next spring to try again. This time, let me know the size of your rootstock so I can try to match the diameter of the scionwood better.

I'm still grafting mulberries and the grafts are doing well. I usually graft from March - October for loquats, mulberry, longan, citrus, guava.

I've got a 2g that I grafted this spring. Healed up and ready to go. I'm in canada though so does present a small risk of seizure, although I've shipped several plants and never had an issue

I did attempt rooting a red Himalayan cutting. So far it actually seems to be taking. Hopefully it will continue to push out buds. Let yall know if it's a definite success eventually.
Trying to grow it all!

I've had no issue rooting Australian Green Mulberry. My large tree got full-on stamped in the ground by a large pine during the hurricane, but the tips still protruding from the ground I cut off and rooted.  All growing in pots now.  Nothing special. Rooted them in cups with 100% take rate under a grow light. Probably could have just set outdoors. Since they're growing in bush mode, I'll make a bunch of extras soon when I cut off the side growths. I think the main key to rooting mulberry varieties which are often difficult to root is using very fresh cuttings. After they've been removed for some days, you'll generally have to graft unless it is one of the easily rooted varieties.  That said, I'll start putting some focus this summer on making new Aust Greens if people are looking for them. Definitely my personal fav mulberry out of the ones I've grown.

Assuming a better plant does not present itself in coming days, you know I'll want one Adam! hehe

I have some grafted White Pakistanis and Shatoots that are starting to push out new leaves.
So stay tuned...

Kevin
