Micro-grafting of Annona's
« on: June 17, 2022, 07:17:40 PM »
May be useful to others
On the first week on May, I grafted 12 small cherimoyas seedlings. 1/8 to 3/16 in in diameter. Several in the propagation tray all 12 took and are growing well as of today June 17. I did prepare the budwood by stripping the leaves a week before harvesting on the Thai Lessard and the others were LM#3 from Brad beautifully wrapped in buddy tape. Now all transferred to 1 gal doing really well. Very unexpected results 100 % small bag use.

I got the seeds in Late December from Brad took like 30 days to germinate. Probably in the range of 3+ months when grafted.

Pretty good. I graft jakfruit and durian like that with good success. One thing I do differently that you might consider is, instead of using tape, I use the grafting clips that are used for tomatoes. It’s quicker but, more importantly, the very young material can be easily damaged while taping.

Is a good idea I will test next time but I had no difficulty with Buddytape.
I do use an orchid clip to hold the bag in place.

There’s the photo of a durian graft that was made on May 25 on rootstock that was planted in March. It’s basically the same with jakfruit and champedek.

How will you transition them from out of the bag? I know Florida is more humid but will you be poking holes in the bag first?

When the buds break out, I put a pin hole in the bag, Once the buds have some leaves like 1/2 inch, I open the bag at the bottom but leave it on. A day or two later I remove the bag.  Remember this happened on early May it was a bit dryer but very windy and this dries up the young bud and this give them some protection. Unsure how it would work now, very hot and humid a lot less wind.
Will probably try a few in a few days.

I keep them completely enclosed in a bag that tucks under the pot. When that bag comes off depends on the species.
Durian 2-3 weeks
Jaks 3-4
Pouterias 4 weeks
I might take the bag off for a few hours toward the end and then leave it loosely replaced.  I do that to gradually acclimatize the plant. I’m not worried about too much humidity inside the bag.

I also did a couple annona micro grafts this season as well, and had about a 80% take rate. No special treatment was given to any of them besides placing them in a shady area, but maybe using bags or stripping the leaves on the scions a bit before grafting would have raised the success rate.

Also got this incredibly small graft to take. :o If those were micro grafts this must be a nano graft!

What did you use for rootstock and scion?

Great success rate. The bags do seem unnecessary since you are using buddy tape and have swollen buds. Is your main concern that once the bud breaks, it may dieback and shrivel the scion?

What did you use for rootstock and scion?

All the rootstock is cherimoya and I had success with atemoya, cherimoya, and reticulata scions.
