Currently I use a silver sharpie marker to write/identity what is planted in my black plant pots. It has worked well in the past, though recently I’m having an issue where I’ll buy multiple packs of silver sharpie markers and they seem to be defective/dried out/the flow of ink isn’t constant.

So looking to see if anyone can recommend a better permanent marker brand? My favorite means of identifying the plants is permanent silver/white lettering on the black pots. I’m open to new ideas also.

Thanks,
-Joe

I had a couple of used pots with aluminum duck tape attached.
The tapes were still sticky and removable after 2 years in my possession.
They had what looked like black sharpie markings on the duck tapes.
Markings looked fresh after 2 years in the sun.

I haven’t test this method yet.

Paint markers work much better and last for a long time.  This is the one I use:

China markers in white or yellow work great.

I just use a regular graphite pencil. Haven't found a marker that holds up in the sun here.

Store pens and sharpies point down and they'll last WAY longer has been my experience.

I use the aluminum embossing tags for permanent tags once the plant is a good size. Writes fine with pencil or pen and you can wrap the wire around a little trunk or branch and good for long term, may just need to move them if branch outgrows wire tire.

Paint pen is also a good call.

Not sure if I remember right that the ink was changed in some markers, fumes too much for school use.
Anyway I have labels from years ago ink is still good, I replaced some last year, new pen, new tape,  and they faded in 6 months.
Aluminium tags are good as it is indented even with a pencil pressed hard, no ink to fade. Same for UV stable plastic labels, you can scratch it in with a sharp nail.
I have had a moments of trying to decipher codes on some labels I wrote, it usually comes back a few days later.

I think Ive tried everything. If you want it to still be there years later than I'd use the metal labels-

Ended up going with listing pencil off Amazon, great recommendation Mike, cheap, writes easy, easy to read, stays on, and is fast ….yes the metal tags will last till apocalypse but but when you wanna label 100 plus random pots quickly this is the way I think 👍

Nice! I recently ordered a couple of those pens. The metal stuff works well but it’s tiring after doing a hundred or so.
