Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2025 Mango season
« on: Today at 10:20:43 AM »

Ultimately, I will be eliminating the most susceptibke varities- that will be the best long term solution.

This was me last year. I totally eliminated any mango with disease/flowering issues.

Now I have these only,
Orange Sherbet
Dwarf Hawaiian
Angie
Buttercreme
Honey Kiss
Little Gem
Pickering
Maha Chanok
Cecilove
Duncan

This year I took my Bell/Kari out.

We just couldn't keep up with the amount of fruit it produced and honestly it tastes like a watered down citrus fruit.

Lemon drop mangosteen took its place.

Just did some yesterday.

The next few weeks temps should continue to push growth.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ants at the base of mango tree a problem?
« on: February 03, 2025, 11:37:58 AM »
Ants can actually help pollinate. Just keep an eye out for aphids and leaf damage. You can try using tanglefoot to keep the ants from going up the tree but I gave up doing that.

Same, tanglefoot was a mess and I tried a bunch of ideas to make it easier.

Also gave a few trees a temp tattoo.

I will say in that area, you probably will need to protect it.
Like mentioned, mamey fruits can take a long time to ripen so it will probably need protection.

There are some dwarf kinds like pumpkin pie and jamaica...
I bet you could keep the tree under 8 ft and still get a good crop and be able to cover it if you're up for the challenge

My experience with pumpkin pie is it needs to get big to produce well. The size of the fruit would be a problem if they get any extended cold.

10
Viejo would be your best bet to grow there since the fruit are so small unless you protect it during cold snaps.

Thomas seems to be quite vigorous.

I bought my thomas sap at lara farms a few years ago.

Just dying flowers that's all.

I actually hosed down a bunch of that today before I sprayed sulfur.

PM looks much different.

I have a group of feral cats I feed that love to destroy all other living things.

I suspect you are in west boca if so, Angie and Little Gem are the only ones on those lists that are basically insurance mangoes.

Might get wild with the cold front coming around the 11th, 12th.

I’ve been watching that thread about the sprayer with agitator wondering why people need to spray. I’ve had an Angie producing for the past 4 years and the only thing that prevents me from enjoying all of my mangoes are the raccoons. Never any anthracnose or disease. I have a few other cultivars that will begin producing this year so I’ll have to see if it’s the variety or my location.

Powdery Mildew decreases yields. Some plants cant even make it past that. My Angie gets it but still Manages to produce well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Year-round Mamey Sapote
« on: December 26, 2024, 05:24:50 AM »
Planted in full sun in my front yard with no drip line with 3 other mameys. Holding 3 almost semi mature fruits, had 2 mature fruit which were excellent in May. Only thing I give them is iron a few times a year and lawn fertilizer. Though the beetles love this tree so when I notice some attacks I focus on this tree because those guys try to strip it. So sometimes Im drowning full cups of those beetles.

I used cheap southern AG sulfur with a sticking agent and no issues with residue in the tank.

First spray done in no time.

This was so easy I shouldnt have waited.
