I had a Silas that had the rubber trunk issue but my Makok is wonderful.

It sounds like Florida is an easier path to take.

The USPS in general is a nightmare, in Florida it can bounce around between Ybor, WPB, Miami's 2 distribution centers back to Ybor again to get to me in S.E. Fla it can take 11 days.

I think the employees are DELIBERATELY "missending" to get overtime, spite the system, get a raise, justify their jobs or are just plain mean. Maybe all of them.

Maybe because most of us are not scientists and don't care to delve into that level of granularity?

5
OP, I read that Gary Zill uses this method and he seems to have been pretty successful doing it.

Look up super smeller and super tasters, maybe you're like most of us and not one? :-)

My all time fave and pleasant surprise is my Rollinia, and disappointment were the many "Mexican cream" guava I bought.

My sweetheart lychee, Fairchild #2 canistel, and Rollinia are all poised for a banner year of production. Anyone else having similar luck?

Yup they're pods like a string bean and delicious. We made a powdered flour of sorts for cookies and adding to coffee.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Variegated seedling
« on: February 07, 2025, 02:24:18 PM »
I have a Julie seedling I call Juicy Lucy that is in ground for over 10 years. She's completely disease free and very productive, and the fruit inherited the Julie "nose" profile but it's a bit more colorful.

Over the years I've had many dozens of volunteer seedlings sprout near and beneath the tree and this year is no exception but of the current crop one is variegated. If it were all alone I'd say it was experiencing chlorosis but there are others fully green within a few inches of this one.

Opinions? Verdict?

For me it's rollinia with sapodilla a close second.

My tree is about to collapse from the weight of the fruit and anyone in south Florida within reach of north Broward county is welcome to PM me and come take what you need.

No shipping, no way, no how sorry.

PM me

gnappi, did you ever get fruit to maturity?

My rollinia is finally setting some fruits and has a ton of flowers now.  I'm still fighting

Mine is in the 3rd or 4th year of fruiting and it has become my fave fruit.

I was told that they are EASY to grow from seed and that is true but I was also told that are difficult to keep alive as seedlings, this I also find to be true.

Every year I have started dozens of seedlings all have died.

The last season (2024) I had hundreds of them but those are down to seven but I am hopeful at least a few survive as I would like  two more trees to fruit for me.

How big is it and how much water do you give it? Mine is in the ground and can have branch die off in winter if it gets water stress during our dry season.

Is yours in a pot?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: is this front yard jackfruit fair game?
« on: December 29, 2024, 01:06:54 PM »
Property owners do not always have the right to have fences in their front yard, and if they do often times they are required to have a setback from the street either by city ordinances or association rules.

It doesn't change the FACT that what THEY planted was on THEIR property for THEIR use AND consumption is NOT for trespassers to steal. Morons who traipse around ASSuming they have some divine given right to TAKE fruit are wrong.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Another bust or banner year for Rollinia?

What are you folks who grow Rollinia seeing? Mine is doing well and as expected fruits are ranging from quarter size to the size of a hard baseball and more flowers erupting.

Before I got my Fairchild #2 I had only tried one other supposedly a Bruce. The #2 was the first tree I saw in person and bought it on the spot.

As far as it being a compact grower goes, yes and no. The trunk stays rather small but its upward growth habit is very tall.

Mine is in ground 15+ years and I topped it once and needs it again... sooner than later.

It produces a lot of fruit, so much I have to give a LOT away!

I often crack one open and sit in my yard spooning the moist flesh into my mouth. I love this tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air layer Q's
« on: December 25, 2024, 09:36:53 AM »
When an airlayered branch has been detached from the source tree and planted should it be cut back, defoliated, neither or both? If it needs trimming and or leaf removal how much?
