I picked my first Rollinia today
« on: April 20, 2023, 06:04:02 PM »
To prevent squirrels, rats, recoon, birds and possum from getting at it before I did, I picked it but left the second one on the tree covered in a white waxed paper bag.

Saturday I will take the second one.

It's been a L-O-N-G four months :-)

Anyway the tree has erupted in flowers and we are looking forward to more in the August time frame.

I hope so for me too! I planted the tree a few years ago and had not tasted the fruit. The picked fruit is 2lb. 5oz. and I have no idea if this is a typical size but the second one on the tree looks even larger :-)

My GF absolutely ADORES Annona and she's pumped about my bringing it there Saturday.

Well, I'm sorry to say my GF was underwhelmed by the flavor mostly because it left a banana peel type astringent film on the tongue. I ate the majority of the two fruits and while I'd not consider it a "top tier" fruit to rival the best mango I found it more refreshing and complex than mango. I look forward to the next crop.

Question? does anyone know if the seeds are viable after being refrigerated?

I have two small 7-gal Rollinia growing. I have to protect them where I'm at so I'm hoping they're worth the effort.

Froot Farms is a family owned/operated edible plant nursery, apiary, and composting site in Christmas, FL.

sorry to hear it wasn't as mind blowing as expected gnappi

I have to say the one that I tasted was at fruit and spice park in homestead-

Very mature tree and probably ideal climate

I would not give up on it yet though

Just because the GF was not bowled over by it no way I'd give up on it. I knew nothing about when to pick them and it's possible that a few more days on the tree might have made a difference but as they were I'd eat them regularly.

I had a few locally and so far it's been meh.
Probably a lot of variability in the fruit.
Next time I need to make sure I get a grafted one or at least a seed from a fruit I liked

Hmm, last time I refrigerated one it killed the flavor and texture...maybe this was your problem?

When I was at Lara Farms last year somehow rollinia (and its mixed reviews) came up when I was talking to the owner, and he said "It's great if you like mucus!"

I couldn't tell how serious he was being.  I guess I will see soon enough, hopefully I will get a fruit set this year on mine.

Cool! From the videos I watched about Rollinia, it gets mucousy/slimy if you let it ripen too much. Someone recommended harvesting the fruit when it has some green and yellow, then eating it the next day for the best texture. I actually just got my rollinia seedlings that I ordered online on Etsy from a local seller in Jupiter FL. I'm looking forward to growing and tasting my first rollinia fruit within a few years.  :)

Good point, I wonder if it was the refrigeration that can influence it? I mean unless I cut the fruit and ate half before refrigerating it I'd not know. This season I'll eat some and not refrigerate them.
