Smallest, Most Compact Mango Trees (Varieties) Worth Growing
« on: September 26, 2024, 02:29:13 PM »
Let's say someone had an empty yard and wanted to grow a nice variety of mango trees.  I'll start the list of "compact" trees with Pickering, Dwarf Hawaiian, Carrie, Honey Kiss, Little Gem, CeciLove, Piña Colada, Orange Sherbet, Neelam, Amrapali, Ice Cream, Jehangir, Sugarloaf.  Anything else you can think of that's worth growing and could be kept at 10 feet and produce well (not an inferior variety like Cogshall)?  If I could get Alex to comment, I'd be very happy.  ;D

Duncan and Angie could be added though not everyone likes the taste of either.

I had a few Duncans this past summer.  I found the flavor to be mild and the skin bitterness very objectionable.  Angie is a reliable producer, but when I had a tree, the fruit never had great brix--so not close to top-tier.  Pineapple Pleasure?  Bolt?  Mahachanok?

I've had bunk Duncans too, and thought it was a shitty mango. Not the case! It is very good to excellent, if picked and consumed at the right time.

Same with Angie. One of my favorite when picked properly.  It just doesn’t ripen well off the tree.

Everyone has always said that tree ripened pickerings are as good as any mango. This season, mine produced for the first time, and I can confirm. That tree can't be beat.

I just checked, and the last time Alex Salazar was active on the forum was December 11.  I wonder what happened.  I hope he hasn't abandoned us for good.

I think we've covered the subject pretty well.  Lots of worthwhile candidates mentioned, and I think someone could use this as a guide.  Thanks for your responses.
