Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: zill 20-46
« on: February 01, 2024, 04:41:23 PM »
Bumping my old thread, all zill 20-46 i had were phenomenal & all seeds were poly while zill 40-26 seeds were all mono.

I wonder what is the history of zill 20-46?

Base on my own palates, this mango blows e4 away.
I ate a prime e4 last year with 23 brix was a great one & ate zill 20-46, oh boy...its definitely #1 for 2023.

Luckily, they are poly as i have few seedlings growing on a harsh winter we have with 28f coldest unprotected.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pouteria lucuma
« on: January 19, 2024, 03:54:32 PM »
With just two rootstocks to play with, I'll need to wisely choose my cultivars (though I could diversify later as the branching multiplies).

What would be the best way to learn about cultivars? I have seen references to Seda and Palo. What's available in the US?

Thanks...
Alastair

Hi Alastair,

I think that "de seda" (moist type, literally translated as "silky") and "de palo" (dry/"mealy" type, literally translated as "woody") are phenotypes of lucuma rather than actual named cultivars, but could be mistaken on that (I'm an amateur and noobie at growing exotic/tropical fruits, and have no education in botany so I might be using the term "phenotype" incorrectly here).

I made an online purchase of a couple lucuma seedlings from Nate @ Wildlands in June 2023 and I think he had scions of a named cultivar called "Pecan Pie" around that time. Slightly tangential, but the seedlings are doing great in my climate even though the weather has been really chilly, wet, and "blech" around my neck of the woods in the Sacramento area -- they've actually been pushing a tiny bit of new growth. I've been pretty impressed by their hardiness for something that I thought would be more sensitive than has actually been the case.

Pivoting back to named cultivars, I recently read a writeup I found online about lucuma and it seems that Peru and Chile have a lot of actual named cultivars (‘Calzada’, ‘Yema de Huevo’, ‘San Hilarión’, ‘La Molina’, ‘Amarilla 1’, ‘Tercer Mundo’) but I'm not sure how one would obtain scionwood of those barring traveling to South America, collecting the scionwood themselves and going through the process of importing with the proper paperwork and inspections.

As for Pecan Pie variety from Papaya Tree Nursery, its probably a renamed variety.
If anyone can shed knowledge whats the real history of it.  :)

If you can get Gary top pot soil then it will flourish.

If you can't, then you can mix it yourself. Use builders sand, pumice/ perlite and peatmoss or instead of peat moss,  use 40% dirt.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Real name for Birula atemoya?
« on: October 06, 2023, 12:47:55 AM »
I didn't know about his tree getting cut off by the gardener. That was very good that you had one of his grafted trees. I remember when he mentioned he had the budsport on his tree. I have not seen the fruit in person, but it sure looks nice. Really appreciate you sharing the budwood this year. I hope my grafts have fruit in a few years. At least it has been saved by you and others who grafted your budwood.

Yes. Its a budsport of birula. He showed me the scion of the budsport. Unfortunately, his gardener did a shitty job.

Once ripe. I'll share u some yellow birula.

Yellow birula is a budsport of birula. It was accidentally pruned by his gardener. I was lucky to obtained a tree from him.

Here is a photo of yellow birula 3 or 4 yrs ago from a very small graft.

Now is matured enough..i should be able to get bigger fruits.

I'd say it is only suited for the more advanced growers.

Hold my beer…

I haven’t heard of any success in growing this fruit in SoCA with a few possible exceptions.  Would still love to taste it based on K-Rimes experience in El Salvador

JF have successfully grew ilama var rosada and had fruited multiple years.

Currently, he has a fruiting guillermo and genova and forgot the other var which are currently growing fruitlets right now.
