Are there dwarf loquats
« on: November 22, 2023, 12:28:12 AM »
I had a big in the ground.  But after 8 years in ground with no flowers and the past 2 years, about 30% die back, I decided to axe and plant something more productive.
Would like to may be container grow a loquat, that way can move it into shade in June, July, August.
Anyone know of dwarf varieties with sweet fruit and if so, where to purchase?

Was yours grafted? My grafted ones try to fruit in 1 gallon pots, not even two feet tall.

I would ask Kaz.

With select pruning once, maybe twice per year, should have no problem keeping loquat at manageable size.

Andrew, I grew loquat seedlings for 6 years in a 20 gallon pot before it finally flowered. I bought 2 1 gallon cultivars and grew them in a 2 gallon pot for 1 year before they flowered (forced flowering in spring) and them potted them up to a 10 gallon. This is the plant now 18 months after purchase.

Quince is used as a dwarfing rootstock for loquat.

My parents have a seedling loquat that’s over 10 years old and has never flowered. On the flip side, I have grafted named varieties to seedlings and they flowered the following year.

To answer your question , You can graft any Loquat variety onto Quince to dwarf it . I have a 10+ year old Multi graft Loquat on Quince rootstock.
It's less than 8' tall.

I agree with the quince rootstock for dwarfing as mentioned. I hear of many people using it since it grows slowly, trunk doesn't grow fast like a loquat seedling.

Andrew,
"I had a big in the ground.  But after 8 years in ground with no flowers and the past 2 years, about 30% die back, I decided to axe and plant something more productive."

Don't kill your larger tree, just cut it down to the height you want and a few feet more, then wait until you get new shoots or do a bark graft on the stumped tree with some good varieties from me or other forum members here. This way you can get fruits in 1-2 yrs just like an adult loquat tree would fruit, in 2 years after grafting that tree will give you many fruits faster than any new tree you plant. If you want it in a larger pot, just dig it out after your grafted scion wood is growing (1-2 ft).

What Kaz said, but leave one branch of the seedling (un-grafted shoot) to see what your seedling produces.
I had a tree in the ground must have been 8 plus years before it fruited from the seedling, grafted varieties had been fruiting for a few years.  When the seedling fruited, it was a very excellent fruit.  Great tase and nice size.

This way, you both eat your cake and have it :)
