is there any other rootstock that dwarfs citrus as much as flying dragon?
-
US897 is close to FD. Marumi kumquat seedlings are used as rootstock and is about the same as FD and it does very well on it's own roots
-
I didn’t know marumi would be a great alternative! I’m gonna have to go get me another tree now!
-
I have a fast flowering trifoliata that is a dwarf. Haven't tried it as a rootstock yet. Guess it's time to try it.

I have mine growing nicely from you laaz, very enjoyable to watch grow. I have about 5 coming in. I’ll be trying them soon, one is around 1.5ft, hoping to see flowers next year!

Marumi makes excellent fruit and is a very nice looking tree. If it is a reasonable replacement for flying dragon I would love to ditch all my nasty FD seedlings that are constantly getting caught on things with their curved thorns. How does it fare in various soils, disease resistance, etc?

As Laaz wrote, the fast flowering trifoliata is a very dwarf tree, or it might be more accurate to describe it as an extremely slow growing tree.. I am in doubt that it would be very valuable as a root stock. However, one never knows until it is tried. I will give that job to Laaz.

I have two FFTri from Lazz. Bloomsweet gfruit on one and Louisiana naval on the other. So far very slow growth....usually fast growing scions on Swingle/Carrizo. We shall see what happens.
-
I have a half dozen FF trifoliate seedlings from Laaz also. My experience with trifoliate is that the seedlings are always slow growing for a while. I can't yet see a difference yet between Laaz's seeds and some FD seeds I got from an internet seller at the same time... the seedlings are all about 4in tall.
I have been thinking of grafting some scions of kumquat varieties that I don't much like to eat onto these very slow growing rootstocks so I can preserve my collection without wasting too much space.

Brian you should see the difference as FD has curved thorns.

I meant in their growth rate. I haven’t looked at them closely enough to check out the thorns, but I know what you mean as I have gotten FD and non-FD sprouts from FD seeds
