Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bananas.org dead?

When it is up Bananas.org has some good resources, particularly their bananawiki. The site is so slow and clunky. Really a shame as they have good info archived and many photos. Would love it if this forum created a banana subsection.

Try Hollywood plum. It is pretty widely available, a strong grower and quite productive of small plums with dark red skin and flesh.

My experience with ground squirrels over the past 3 years in the San Diego area has been eye opening. I am in a semi rural area, Bonsall. Moved here 5 years ago. Property was largely barren but well populated with Squirrels. Have planted about 200 trees. First year the trees were decimated by squirrels. Got an air rifle, Benjamin Marauder, and started hunting. Got about 10 in a week but it did not make a dent. Got a squirrelinator trap. Wow!! Captured and euthanized over 100 poor souls over the next 6 months. Some of those were undoubtably reinfestation from adjacent properties.

Since that eradication the trap is put out whenever I see them on my property. Have gotten about 2 per month since. My property is 2.5 acres.

It would be an interesting experiment. If you can get the vertical flower to bend towards your property it might work out. Are you on good enough terms with your neighbor that you can offer to share a hand or 2 come harvest time?

5
First I have heard of this hybrid. My main concern would be chill requirement for flowering and fruit set.

6
It may have dropped leaves for spring dormancy. Are buds swelling? Full sun is usually not a problem if you acclimate the plant.

Ha ha ha. Looks like green tomatoes. WS fruit are surprisingly variable in size and shape.

Brad, I would suggest Fino de Jete. It is between A and B pattern.  Could send you cuttings.

@mcoambassador my trees have had the good fortune to have only rare exposure to either light frost or extreme heat residing 5 to 15 miles from the coast. Luciida, Nata, and Orton have been weak growers for me. Other than those all other varieties have thrived and fruited well on strong cherimoya rootstock. For me rootstock vigor has trumped variety in determining how an individual tree has done. With late summer heat all of my cherimoya have shown some stress such as burned leaves and burned fruit when not under the canopy. Not growing it now but Booth has been my most bullet proof variety in the past.

I have planted and fruited about 30 cherimoya and atemoya varieties over a span of 35 years in Orange and San Diego counties. Some I have tried on 3 different properties. Most have done very well. The most important variable for me has been the quality of the rootstock. In my conditions anything grafted to a really strong cherimoya rootstock has done well. Dr White, Fino de Jete, El Bumpo, and Pierce have given the highest fruit quality. My current property has enough room that all the varieties are on individual trees as opposed to multigrafted trees. Still trying new cultivars as I find them. Looking forward to adding more in future years.

I Know Anthony well. He is a good man and would not knowingly misrepresent his trees. When prices are particularly favorable it is more profitable to buy from another grower than go through seedling and graft process. Mislabeling can occur at any stage of the process. It is a lot of time and work. When he does it himself he makes sure the scion wood expresses the said phenotype.

Sorry for anyone who has mislabeled trees. I have at least 4 cherimoyas trees that are not what they were sold as. Amazes me because they were well grafted strong plants. Someone thought they were doing good.

Janet, so impressive. I can relate to all the challenges and hard work as I have put in about 1.5 acres of orchard on my home property just south of you in Bonsall over the past 3 years. For me the two limiting resources have been time and of course water. I have a well that has covered my needs so far but they are more modest than what your acreage will require. Looking at your projects makes me jealous and exhausted for all the possibilities.

Not really acreage Ollie. I have between 1 and 1.5 acres of orchard. Any more would start to feel like work.

I will now have a Suebelle seedling and the Vernon in ground to accept grafts in future years. May plant a third WS to replace a useless landscape tree on a moderate slope. Regardless,I am sure just one white sapote will produce more fruit than I can shovel within a couple years. Just one more fruit crop to keep he chickens fat.

Found a grafted Vernon for $39 at the Oceanside Home Depot. Will plant it with plans to graft scions in the spring.

Would like to plant Mcdill or Younghans gold. Open to most others except Suebelle which I already have. Thanks in advance.

Thanks Brad. This year I only had 3 fruits and the critters must have got ‘em. Was worried that I missed harvest season and they just fell off. Looks like I will have many more fruit next year.

Very nice bunches. Doubt that any of those will be ready until thanksgiving or later. During winter it is a good idea to harvest before the psuedostem goes into full decline and ripen in the garage. If they are somewhat plumped up they usually ripen.

Which one is Goldfinger? My example has underperformed severely so if you rip it out I might be interested in a pup.

The melon variety is probably Ichiba Kouji.

I have a nice young Cherilata tree that I grafted on cherimoya rootstock last year. Very vigorous. Will probably get fruit this season. Actually it set and aborted a couple last year so it appears precocious. I have started giving annonas 2 or 3 years before deciding on fruit quality. I have had several varieties of cherimoya were very average on young trees but become excellent by year 3 in my yard. Fino de Jete, Knight, and Dr. White did not perform well early on.

Looks like sunburn damage. Happens mostly to fruit on young trees with sparse foliage.

Is anyone in Southern California getting good quality fruit from Kwai Muk?
